Nice comparison of the old and new.

Only just read this, but phew: correct decision!

Yeah the electrician was at it for about an hour and a half so I reckon it would taken me twice that long… or more accurately an hour and then a desperate attempt to back out and repair it.

Anyone got any kitchen sink fitting/buying advice? Current one is 960mm long but most of the new ones I can find are 1000mm. What gives?

I think I’ve figured it out.

Did everything apart from tiling and that switch box thing.

Want a new kitchen sink and tap but that’s a worry for another day.

Eurgh. Got a leak between water meter and just outside back door. Reading the meter suggests 70 odd litres every 30mins…yeesh. Can see very little water on the surface though. Like literally a filled bricks worth of water. Probably just all flowing under the foundations!
Got a mate who repairs leaks for the water company, but he’s off with a fucked leg. Wondering if I can wait until Monday if my pal can’t help train me up and give a go fixing it ourselves…
Stupid old fucking house!

get an emergency plumber out. that’s a fuck load of water

I spoke to the water company and queried whether that was a concerning amount of water and the guy was basically “for a leak, not really”. Need to phone their leak team tomorrow morning and then will try and get someone out tomorrow.
I can barely see any water on the surface at all so bit concerned where it is all going…
Has been going on for at least 3 days as initially thought the surface water I was seeing was from a blocked grill on the drain for the outlet pipes for the washing machine and dishwasher.
Weekend emergency plumber is gonna be fucking expensive and will be the kind of job a lot of people won’t want to touch I reckon.

Do not do this. Ever.

Have you got any clue what’s caused the leak? Seems really strange. If you’ve got the stomach for it you could start digging yourself to find it. That’s what they’re going to end up doing anyway, and you might be able to bung a rag in it or something and still be able to have a couple of cups of tea.

am still up neurotically equipping myself with knowledge for tomorrow!
basically when we bought the house it was referenced in the reports that there had been an ‘escape of water’ in this exact spot which is now just over 5 years ago, so presume it is whatever fix (that cost £300) to fix failing…
Looking into it the water board will find the leak for free and fix even when it is on our supply pipe (they’re really vague and non-committal about this and manage to make it sound like the norm but also at their discretion).
The amount of water seems alarming, but a running hose would be 7ish times that amount, a running tap twice as much, and it is a few feet from the house…so not that worried in the interim.
Don’t reckon I will get anyone from water company until at least Monday though.
Could easily turn off and on the external tap to stop the flow, but water companies are weird about this and apparently you need their permission and that and don’t charge to turn if off, but do charge £80 to turn it on etc
tl;dr #myleakstory

I didn’t know that about the companies and the external stopcock. When I had my first flat and was plumbing in my bathroom and kitchen I turned it on and off regularly. It was just a tap after all. If that’s all it is with you then I’d be tempted to turn it off when I don’t need water, but it’s your call. Like you say the leak sounds alarming, but even a couple of days of soaking the ground outside your house is unlikely to cause any lasting damage. If it did then your insurers should sort it out.

Just to clarify my point about emergency plumbers, as my brother pointed out when I made the mistake of panicking and hiring one: “good plumbers don’t need to work weekends”. The one I got in to “fix” the botched shower installation I’d done that had resulted in a damaged bare pipe emptying constantly into the bath, arrived and the first thing he did was take my card details. I was then informed that I’d be charged an extortionate rate by 15 minute intervals. He took a couple of hours to make a very half-arsed job of refitting the shower, including at one point suggesting I come with him to Wickes to get a part (which would have been the most expensive taxi ride I’d ever had). In the end I had to tell him to sling his hook, because I’d have been bankrupted if I’d let it carry on.

So don’t hire emergency plumbers. If you have a plumbing emergency call your insurer.

“Come with me to Wickes, yeah?”:joy:
Yeah, think I’m too tight to ever hire an emergency plumber!

I could definitely shut off the water. I mean, I’m pretty sure I could fix myself if when I dig down I find some modernish blue piping that I can cut out and brass bolt both ends (or whatever the plumbing depot tell me I need) with some replacement job. Think the hardest bit is normally finding the thing, and I am pretty certain I know exactly where it is.
Might find really old pipe though at which point I’m like “waters off the menu for the foreseeable guys!”

Called the water company leak team after reading all their huge policy doc on fixing a leak for free and free detection and they basically said that was unlikely to happen and kept saying ‘discretion’
The leak team booked in a leak test for 24th March!!
Obviously I am going to get sorted before then, and have someone coming on Monday to take a look, but that is mad. They said it didn’t sound too bad again, so not overly worried now. To me it seems like an incredible amount of water though.

Have £500 excess on my insurance for water leak and if needs replacing not sure it would be eligible and just fall under wear and tear…

Can’t express how much I am not up for this at the moment!

Yeah it’s shit and I feel for you mate. But basically any leak on your side of the stopcock is going to cost you money one way or the other.
