Blast from the past - my copy of the remastered re-release of the first Medulla Nocte album arrived today and it sounds massive. Absolutely savage late 90s British metalcore, some of them later went on to form Murder One with Jonny Morrow from Iron Monkey (RIP). Remember seeing Medulla Nocte open for Entombed in about 1999 and thinking it was the worst thing I’d ever heard. What a dickhead. Great band.

New Sigh album in September:
Main-man Mirai Kawashima notes that this is as personal an album as ‘Shiki’, both musically & lyrically. From a musical perspective, if you were to place the main ingredients of Celtic Frost, Voivod, Black Sabbath, horror movies & Japan into a cauldron & stir it, you will get ‘Goh-ka’. Numerous additional spices such as psychedelic rock, prog rock & classical music are also evident over the album’s close to one-hour duration.
The primary theme permeating the album is Kuso-zu; a series of Buddhist paintings or illustrations depicting the nine stages of a human body’s decomposition after death, created to encourage meditation on the impermanence of life, the inevitability of death, & the detachment from physical beauty & worldly attachment. It openly shows the harsh reality that no matter how beautiful you are, you’ll be dead & rot sooner or later. And Kuso-shi is a poem based on these paintings. The artworks on the cover & in the booklet of ‘Goh-ka’ are therefore Kuso-zu themselves.
Among the additional contributors to the album, Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth notably delivers a special guest guitar solo on the track, ‘Unputenpu’.

A band that i should love, but haven’t fully clicked. Haven’t given up though
Nice. The production sounds so clean! I’ve been deep diving into first few records ahead of their old school set on Saturday, and this is such contrast to the rawness. Sounds good though.
I prefer their cleaner sounding stuff to be honest.
Took me a long time, bought Hail Horror Hail and couldn’t get on with it, still not that keen on it. I got into them more with Gallows Gallery and they finally fully clicked with In Somniphobia, after that I rediscovered a lot of their back catalogue, including Imagindry Sonicscape, those two are probably my favourite Sigh albums.

Listening to this Icelandic monster from 2022 for the first time in a while. Mid to slow tempo atmospheric black, with an incredible vocal performance, the manic laughter and screams of anguish towards the end the track Hugklofnun are so intense, the vocalist apparently had to go to hospital after the recording!
Converge / Blackbraid / Sanguisugabogg / Pupil Slicer tour coming at end of year
