Looks like Diddy is going to get off pretty lightly, seems the prosecution fucked it

Have a lot of nostalgia for early Chance and it sounds like he’s really trying to recapture that energy but… IDK. Not quite

Hopefully that JID ep is just clearing out the crap before the album. Glad he saw sense not to put that Eminem verse on there

Have listened to this a few times since it came out and quite enjoy it. Heavily reminiscent of one the least cool, most maligned periods of rap music, i.e. the mid-00s where backpacker rappers were making overly sincere Kanye chipmunk soul ripoffs. Which makes me wonder why people on the internet have gone nuts for it, but there we go.

It’s a bit one note (basically high tempo old Kanye numbers) and the mixing is a bit off, but they do it pretty well for a duo who were completely unknown before. If you’re a mid-00s apologist like me, it’s a good exercise in nostalgia. Basically hits the same chord as the Saba LP, without being as good.

Fair enough, to say you enjoyed the album you’ve come out with quite a few reasons to discredit it . I have tempered my initial hype for it but still think it’s really good.

However,

is a tag I find confusing. Because of the terminology I assume it’s sped up soul with super high pitched vocals, like Scooter. Can’t recall any of that on this album?

Guess I’m pointing out the shortcomings because it’s currently ranked as the second best album of the year on AOTY, and yeah, it’s definitely not that good. It’s is a solid if slightly derivative album in a style I’m pretty nostalgic for, which came out of nowhere from a couple of newcomers, and that’s cool.

Chipmunk soul isn’t scooter. It originated with the RZA pitching up soul vocals on Wu records, and peaked in popularity with early Kanye production (think Through the Wire), which leaned heavily on it. Think the majority of tracks on Egotrip have pitched up soul vocals on them.

Think they should do a record together, they have really good chemistry.

Did anyone see the Havoc and Big Noyd as Mobb Deep show? Playing here in a couple of months and I’m wondering if it’ll be any good (seems to be well received in this Guardian review, though ‘New York rap duo can still keep the temperature rising’ is a bit disingenuous).

Guess they’re meant to have that new album coming out too, though I have very low expectations.
