Really enjoyed the Erykah/Alchemist album. Don’t think it’s a surprise that Alc can produce something a soulful as this.
Obviously nothing groundbreaking, but the Czarface/Frankie Pulitzer (Tom Hardy) album is a lot of fun. This track with Meth is great…

Not got round to the new Czarface yet but I am listening to Inspectah Deck’s solo album Dragon’s Breath from earlier this month and as you said, no earth is being shattered but I am enjoying it more than I might have expected (albeit I’m only at track 9 of 19, not sure I need another 40 minutes…)
The surprise for me is that he’s been in his comfort zone for quite a while now (imo), and honestly, I had lower expectations for this (maybe expectations were lower in general) than had Erykah straight announced a new solo album after all these years. Also the single kinda suggested this would be Alc on autopilot, which we get a fair bit of now (no knock really, he’s made a hell of a lot of great music).
But he steps up to it and brings a soulful, diverse, deep listen, and I never got the expected feeling of listening to a mixtape. They make the whole thing gel together, it feels more organic than expected, Alc is flexing his range. And there are a bunch of moments where I thought, even in an era where her influence looms large, no one else writes songs like this do they? Might both be very good and her weakest record yet, but the bar is fairly high.

The fact that the Czarface record with Tom Hardy is considerably better than the one with Ghostface, or two with MF DOOM just goes to prove what a strange little world it is

Waiting for my mate in a bar opposite EartH before the MIKE and Earl Sweatshirt show - there was a queue round the block at 6:50. We’re going to be the oldest there by at least a decade. Psyched!

This might be the project that finally gets me to listen to a whole album of 7L and Esoteric! I don’t think I ever listened to the DOOM ones and used to be pretty much a completist.

Very fun night, but the show itself was… OK.
They had a lot of their friends on stage for the first hour who varied in quality. Some great (Jadasea) some just plain wack.
Mike and Earl then did another two hours - first hour was lots of Pompeii material. Found that album pretty dull but it sounded good played loud on EartH’s soundsystem so might revisit. Crowd was a little flat.
Second hour was them doing their solo stuff. Crowd seemed more engaged. I definitely enjoyed it more, but still bounced before the end. Monday night at the end of the bank holiday - I’d had enough by 10:45.

That Earl verse on the new Erykah Badu is just plain bad. Like he’s a parody of himself now. Can barely listen to him anymore, think he’s so far past his best.

He’s a funny one. I always check his music and pretty much always enjoy it, but since i’ve started keeping year end lists, he has never troubled the top ten. I wasn’t really a big Odd Future guy though.
