Yeah, I get it with some of the vocal stuff too, not my favourite kinda thing, but sort of works in the context of the album.

Started following this playlist on Spotify recently which has helped to get into a lot of stuff. Always found jazz quite impenetrable- I know that’s probably not the case really, just found it tough to search stuff out when I already spend so much time listening to other genres.

Anyway, if you go to this guy’s profile he’s split this all out into shorter, hour long playlists- can be quite a good route into new stuff.

I don’t know what I’m missing, but it just ain’t there for me. Regularly hear it spoken of as JC’s finest work.

I’m really enjoying Corrie Dick’s new record, as well as George Crowley’s Can of Worms.

Going to see Time is a Blind Guide by Thomas Stronen next month too which should be amazing.

Got Herbie Hancock’s Sextant the other day - incredibly cosmic while still keeping the groove strong. More wild than headhunters. still sounds like it’s from the future even though it was released in 73.

Also got Dexter Gordon - Our Man in Paris from the same shop, great quartet hard bop and I love his strong tone, great on big swingers and possibly even better on ballads.

Also I’d recommend everyone should go and listen to Joe Henderson - The Elements.

That era of Herbie albums is incredible. ‘Sextant’, ‘Thrust’ and ‘Man Child’ are great as well. The cover for ‘Thrust’ is brilliant. Look at Herbie pilot a spacecraft using a keyboard while heading for Machu Picchu.

2 albums a month for the best part of £90 (inc p&p) fuuuuuuuck!

damned expensive, but by all accounts, you ain’t ever gonna have heard anything like this. reviews for previous subscriptions have been nothing but tremendous. limited press, too. check out a few of those shitty unboxing vids on youtube, if you don’t believe the quality of the product.

all over it. gonna live on jazz and dried bread for the next 6 months. easy

Been meaning to get this in. 12 hours though

checked this out a couple nights ago

love a toothless, flawed genius

don’t think anything he’s done comes close to the masterful Maiden Voyage though. just sayin’ maaaaaaan

shit jazz fan

I must go dig through those earlier solo records. Big fan of his work with Miles in the Second Great Quintet era but never truly investigated his albums as band leader from that time. Will get cracking on that!

Hi. One of the new user crew here, first post.

I go to see a fair bit of jazz stuff, and would second the tip for Corrie Dick. He also plays in Elliot Galvin’s trio, who are a favourite of mine and have recently released a second album, as well as with Laura Jurd who has now called her band Dinosaur, album imminent I think.

Other good new(ish) people I really enjoy are:
Lauren Kinsella whose bands are Blue Eyed Hawk and Snowpoet, she has a great voice.
Ralph Wylde, a vibes player getting ready to release his first album
Kit Downes is always doing interesting collaborations, he’s an amazing pianist
Moss Freed is s fantastic guitarist, he has band called Let Spin who are great.

I could go on but maybe best stop there, it seems you can edit posts so I’ll try and come back with links.

Let Spin are awesome. Love all of Kit Downes’ stuff too, saw Troyka not long ago and they blew me away.

I saw this at our local indie cinema about 5 years ago - really good. I notice Sky Arts seem to be showing it every now and again (when they aren’t showing drunk Dutch people farting about to Andre Rieu)

Woops, I always get those two mixed up.

Has this thread died or can we keep it breathing?

London Jazz Festival full programme was announced this week, anyone else given it a look? I should think there will be more events added before November, why they make a big deal about publishing the list is a bit unclear to me.

I bought tickets for Michael Wollny when that was announced a while back, his trio is brilliant. A few things catch my eye from the schedule but there’s not much that stands out above and beyond what is normally going on really.

I don’t know of anyone making cool jazz but if you’re into that you should check out; Dave Brubeck (quartet, trio, anything), Paul Desmond (saxophone player with Dave Brubeck but has a lot of great solo and duet albums), Stan Getz, Art Pepper, Chet Baker.

I know Art Pepper and Chet Baker, but I’ll certainly check out the others.

Mingus Monday subthread!

Swings hard, lots of Mingus audibly whooping, plus horns imitating pigs.

What’s everyone’s favourite works of Charles?
