Rolling Stone dropped their ‘Top 100 Greatest Punk Albums of All Time’ list 2 days ago. I’m not deep into the genre, but rolling stones track record with these lists is notoriously abysmal, and I’ve yet to see anyone review it or give thoughts on it.

Think they’ve actually done pretty well here. A good spread of sub genres and eras. I don’t agree with everything but there’s nothing there that doesn’t merit it.

Nice article. Some of the ordering is highly questionable - yet it’s inclusions are largely fantastic. It leans too hard into Nirvana, their influence, members and their influencers, but I quite like that about it (the article). Agree that it would make a good listening club.

Looks pretty good, some bad stuff comically higher than some good stuff but plenty of good stuff at least.
Feels weird that they picked a Pere Ubu compilation album when they’ve mostly stuck to studio albums elsewhere (though I never knew their original guitarist left before the first album was recorded and was dead by the time it came out)

(If you despise the Canadian indie rock band formed in Calgary in 2008, consisting of Patrick Flegel, Christopher Reimer, Matt Flegel and Mike Wallace, whose experimental style eschewed the polished post-punk revival sound for lo-fi production techniques and eerie, dissonant soundscapes, proving influential on the post-punk scene of the 2010s onwards, fine, but no need to make a big song and dance about it)

Some good albums although their definition of punk is pretty nebulous.

Amazed to see Dead Kennedys as low as 68 but can’t argue with much of the top 10 - although Nevermind’s about as punk as David Geffen’s hamster. Bleach should be in, rather than ‘see also’, arguably In Utero too and agree Kurt and co should be on here but a good bit lower down.
Turnstile: better than Rites of Spring, apparently.
Raged as soon as I saw Faith/Void at 98(!!!) then Idles on the list.
They picked maybe the 3rd best Naked Raygun album too!

Some great albums and I really like the top 6. They’ve taken a very wide non-purist definition of the genre and that’s made for a more interesting list than it might have been. Some of the ordering of records lower down is pretty bizarre though.
I can’t help but feel that their inclusion of several greatest hits and various artist compilations is a bit of a cheat though.

There are also some good selections in the ‘See also’ bits although the connection between Blondie and The Clean is a complete mystery.
I kinda thought that when I saw “Singles Going Steady” then I realised just how good that is and I can’t say I’ve ever listened to a full Buzzocks album.

It’s a great record for sure, arguably the greatest ‘singles’ album ever, but isn’t it a cheat in a list like this? See also Complete Discography to represent Minor Threat.
The Buzzcocks studio albums are great by the way - you get the pop songs but also 7 minute long electro trance experiments like Moving Away From The Pulsebeat.
