Tune from songs from the beehive in there right at the start !! Thought that was forgotten, love that record
I skimmed through earlier. Returning to it now and only just noticing that each tune has two further listening cuts underneath (many of which are complete classics), so⦠600 tracks in this playlist. Epic stuff.
Looking back, Iāve been reading RA since around 2008, and itās really, really nice to see how theyāve revisited stuff like jungle and DnB. They were always pretty big on grime and were obvs big on dubstep, but those first few years were very white Ibizay, so nice to see some of the more obviously UK 00ās stuff get its flowers.
Honestly, really floored by how well theyāve done this. Itās a near impossible task but feels quite complete. Maybe only lacking a bit of Kompakt, seems to have been written out a bit but expect it to feature in the albums list (& they said no double ups).
Mixed feelings on this, itās obvious a massive amount of effort and time has gone into it but Iām not wild about it being presented as a ranked list. Think I would have liked something that told more of a story about what broke through and when because dance as a genre is too disparate and localised to apply this catch-all approach to.
Iād argue the number 1 shouldnāt be number 1 it is a stone cold classic track that is the centre piece of a stone cold classic of an album (and for the album list could be number 1), but taken out of the context of Lifestyles of The Laptop CafĆ© it just isnāt the one to put as the great standalone track. Suppose my point is that the album is one of those albums that should be always listened to front to back, like Chill Out.
Really enjoying this. First thing Iāve enjoyed from P4K in a long, long time.
Thereās probably some Kompact in the also mentions. I see Voigt & Voigt there. But leaving them out of the top 200 entirely seems a bit miserly.
Do get this point, particularly as itās surely going to feature on the best albums list, and Iāve never really thought of it as a dancefloor banger or anything.
And this too, though maybe it will be accompanied by some articles/features on different scenes. Will be interesting to see what else they publish over the coming days.
Think a best/most important labels would be good, would be a bit more representative of the scenes as I think songs and albums only really tell half the story of whatās going on.
can remember a couple of earlier sa records in there, but any amapiano?
canāt remember any uk funky in there.
guessing the āelectronicā framing is very different from ādanceā
caveat being i only had one quick scan
Represented by
Actually a few in there, but I think Lil Silva is the highest obvious one
ha!
good!
do remember seeing that night slugs font for lil silva now you mention it.
dunno if it was āseasonsā, but that one still went off a couple of times (pretty much the whole crowd chanting) at we out here this year
Yeh agree with this. A bit meaningless but these lists usually are. Otoh Skeng is top 10 so good list!
Yeah Skengās great but I donāt really see the value of comparing it to something like the Disintegration Loops when theyāre clearly trying to do completely different things.
And the record
Swap the top 2 round for me.
Probably should have done 200 here too, as too much stuff gets left out from 25 years, even with the further listening. Less to discover here for me, but still generally a pretty great selection of records.
The main thing about this list is that I somehow have a massive hole on the less famous ones of about 2006-2009.
Think the big records at the timeā¦. Booka Shade, Junior Boys, pre-Swim Caribou etc just arenāt that in vogue at the moment. I love those records mind.
I think this is a really good list though. Maybe Iām easily pleased. But lots of non-European stuff I donāt know, lots of great comps.
For me itās definitely the standout track on an album I only started listening to last year.
Slowly making my way through the Dekmantel sets. The Nobu one is something else
Wall to wall bangers from my guy Muadeep
