See, i’m a narrative over action man, so i don’t mind short matches. I’d argue a good PPV should have a mixture of short and medium length matches, one or two long ones. WM90’s probably another good example of what you’re saying, a dozen quick matches before the main event. Idk, it just felt like they got the audience really giddy by using most of the extreme mid-card faces early doors, making sure there was a couple of solid tag matches, using the valets well, properly whipping up the crowd, etc. The noise in some of the late-80s/early 90s PPVs is insane. It may just be that the characters were stronger right down the roster then.

hmm, yeah, I’d agree that you need a mix of match lengths but those early ppvs to me feel like they’re weighted too heavily towards short nothing matches. I’m fine with that for weekly tv, but for ppvs I think you need to have mostly proper matches. but like you say, the atmosphere was generally way better back then so they must’ve been doing something right

Hate the idea of composing it like an album or a piece of entertainment tbh, still full on Cornette about the whole thing. If some’re short, cool, but I like them being convincing and dramatic physical contests and that really depends on who’s working who rather than just having a broad balance. If 10 short matches and 1 long one makes sense it makes sense. But as such no preference on any length, really.

well yeah but I don’t think those early ppvs were like that really, just roddy piper mugging for 5 minutes followed by a brawl to the back, then repeat with jim duggan, then bad news brown etc. I’d agree that match lengths should feel a bit more “organic” depending who is involved and the story they’re trying to tell, but if we end up with a card of mostly squashes then I’d think something’s gone wrong somewhere

really I just want enough time to get invested in the story and actually enjoy whats happening, that’s kind of difficult if it’s over as soon as it starts (for the most part at least, raven v goldberg is one of my lowkey favourite matches ever and that’s just over 5 minutes I think)

Oh for sure until the last few years the lower card’s been littered with guys who can barely stand up (which had a beauty of its own tbh)
I actually think all Goldberg matches should go like this:

You know who was underrated? Kanyon

100%. he obviously has his limitations, but him just trucking people like that was great fun. unfortunately I think the fact that they’re wheeling JR out to commentate on that one match tomorrow means they’re going to have bill try and work an actual match

haha yeah, he’s still salty about that regal match even now

Theres a comp of him doing Kanyon Cutter out of nowhere and theres a bit where hes trying to leave a carpark and just does it to the attendant.

That shit with him as Boy George and Taker is so horrid

anyone watching takeover? wasnt particularly looking forward to the 8 man tag but it turned out to be a bit of a banger. switching out jose for ohno was a massive upgrade

Joined in at the tag title match :ok_hand:

WWE news so far this wrestlemania weekend:
Drew Galloway aka Drew McIntyre has signed an NXT contract.
32 women tournament announced for the WWE network.

Thought NXT was a really good show, much better than Januarys edition. Finally seem to be building the roster up after losing a lot of its major players over the last year, might start regularly watching again. The tag matches in particular were fantastic

Also a big fan of the new title designs in NXT. Glad the men’s title no longer looks like an industrial monstrosity (though it’s probably the least good looking of the redesigns) and that the women’s belt no longer has the pink crystals
