Still no Fantastic Damage :slightly_frowning_face:

A masterpiece. One of many rap albums that mean I still need to keep my MP3 collection.

Next year I would guess, Fat Possum are doing physical / digital of his catalogue according to his solo site

(Hope this includes The Cold Vein)

Great news! This is the only one i’m missing on vinyl. No idea why i didn’t get it when it came out like the others, and secondhand prices are a little high…

Oh man when Aesop Rock pops up on Run the Numbers

I’m really not a big hip hop fan but so much of that early 00s Def Jux is just magical. All these incredibly talented people making these sonically aggressive (and usually socially progressive) records, popping up on each other’s and just killing it every time. Proper mythical music scene stuff.

The transition from Dear Sirs to Run the Numbers is fucking majestic

Cancer 4 Cure is my favourite El-P jam. Don’t understand why it’s not regarded. It’s bangs from beginning to end

I really love C4C but ISWYD is a few levels above even that for me.

Yes, was a great time. That initial run was great - I bought everything. Had packages from Sandbox Automatic arriving monthly full of Def Jux related tat.

Both great, but few albums blew my mind the way Fantastic Damage and Funcrusher Plus did.

I only discovered it all in retrospect sadly - I picked up ISWYD from the Oxfam near my flat in London (reckon there was at least one music journo in the area - always loads of brand new releases, even still shrinkwrapped in there), it was like £3 or something, cos Mike Diver had given it a glowing review on here.

It was a really fun rabbit hole to fall down though, as you can imagine

Same! 2nd year of uni, 3am, blazed out of my mind in my mate’s living room watching MTV2 and Stepfather Factory came on. I’d never heard anything like it, and I immediately ordered it the next day from the USA. Took a couple of months to arrive but when it did I absolutely rinsed it. Then I went out and bought practically everything else on the label. Just cracker after cracker.

Ah, those were the days! Maybe with an import tax fee to pay. “You can keep yer streaming”

Same here, I thought it was really well regarded, that and R.A.P Music coming out at the same time being the precursor to Run The Jewels and all that. The bit on Oh Hail No when the beat slows down to fit around Danny Brown’s verse is one of my favourite hip-hop bits of the decade

Every word of this post is true.

Think the impact of C4C was dampened by him churning out RTJ records with a similar sound for me. Was never on the level of FanDam or ISWYD, but I think that’s why it doesn’t seem to fit alongside those records as a statement

I see that he’s also adding (some of?) the Weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamix series which are well worth seeking out. The first one is especially good and feels very relevant atm.
