I normally just have a load of banging and shouting, pretty much exclusively punk and metal. I also always keep it on random, just to make it a bit more exciting when I don’t know what’s coming next. It’s great if you’re flagging a wee bit and then Ace Of Spades comes on and kicks you up the arse.

This is a very good song for making you be running faster at the end of it than you were when it began

For me, this is one of the best running songs of the past few years

this is beautiful for late night or scenic runs, full zone-out

love to put on any r&b / pop / rap / k-pop with a bop in it for my usual runs

sometimes whack this on for the final k to make me feel like godzilla

I listen to a lot of different stuff but deafheaven can be great in the gym. Try not going like fucking mad to that. If you start with the latest one you can even get a gentle build up with the first song. Also - because most tracks are like ten mins long you’ve got a lot further than you think by the time one’s ending.

Done loads of 10kms to this recently, so much nostalgia!

It’s not running, but the vast majority of my indoor cycling is done to Iron Maiden playing ridiculously loudly in the background - Live After Death and Rock In Rio are current favourites due to the career-spanning setlists and sheer length of each album. If I’m not in a Maiden mood, The Wildhearts are usually my second choice - Earth vs. The Wildhearts, Fishing For Luckies and P.H.U.Q. are all grade A exercising bangers in my world  Underworld and Kraftwerk are others I turn to if I’m looking for metronomic precision…

If I’m going for a fast run I’ll put on Master of Puppets. PBs all over the place

Orbital are another favourite of mine - The Brown Album or In Sides in particular

Oh, and I mustn’t forget Fuck Buttons’ Tarot Sport, which features the greatest ever exercising track™:

Oh fuck yes.

For best results, time the playlist so this starts 10 minutes before the workout’s end

It’s like the musical equivalent of a runners high.

Definitely. A PB-crushing track if ever there was one

I tend to listen to gospel and (much to my initial surprise) ambient music or folk-ish stuff. Sounds counter intuitive but the likes of Hammock and Bill Fay have sountracked and helped me along many a morning riverside run. Weirdly the kind of stuff I thought would help and that I do like- electronica etc don’t work so well with me on a run. Guess its subjective. I have a love/hate relationship with running - can really help mental health and be a great start to the day - occasionally it can be uplifting during the run but most of the time its about getting through it in one piece.
I am slow runner and perhaps the listening choice partly attributes to this

Haven’t heard that track or album in ages. Reminds me of some good nights out too seeing them live. Nice one.

I actually found that podcasts were better to keep me going than music, although ones that were funny could be an issue if I started laughing. The NHS Couch to 5K app running over PocketCasts was okay because somehow Android (so I guess iPhone might be the same) would tell it to pause while the app announcements came in so you don’t miss any of the info. (I say this because I played one via the music app one time and then it just lowered the volume so that was frustrating.)

Anyway, I used it to work through some of the free Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History podcasts that are like 4 hours an episode. They worked quite well chunked up, but equally Criminal is a great podcast where each episode is usually about 30 mins.

The Field, From Here We Go Sublime. Lovely steady beats and textures. Can really get into a rhythm with it.
