fastest growing part of the market

aha, I didn’t realise they had stores like that (they don’t up here in Scotland, where they are exclusively GIANT warehouses which sit next to a B&Q or similar.)

which part is?

small foot print, convenience, impulse shop

There’s a small ASDA on Deptford High St, it’s weird.

What about online?

These chumps are all running scared from Ocado.

the cost of investment is large, plus the looming threat of amazon fresh or what have you… would need to be brave to take that on.

It’s the way we’re growing

absolutely. Tesco have pulled the plug on a huge number of sites that were earmarked for development on monster retail parks, in favour of the small- medium size stores.

That does sound weird. Like when you see the wimpy in Kilmarnock and it’s just so wrong (but also obvs so right). :sob::rofl:

not sure how this will work in practice… if its just buying power so that they can squeeze suppliers (which is what todays news is focusing on) or if you’ll have a Sainsbury’s distro centre supplying nearby Asda shops etc :man_shrugging:

I didn’t realise the My Local stores had been sold off and closed, but yeah, ASDA have a lot of old Netto sites that are under 2500sqm.

I think there might be a streamlining of distro and logistic services, but they’ll try and keep it as seperate as they can. But who knows.

Geographically there’s still a split between ASDA and Sainsbury’s stores, so I imagine that most of it will stay separate anyway.

Yeah - took over the Poundland. There’s also a small-ish one on Rye Lane in Peckham…

I think they sold (maybe had to sell) some of these. I know the Co-Op bought quite a few. There was a store near me which changed from a Netto to a small Asda to a Co-Op within a year or two.

Another vote for Davidoff Cool Mozzas.

It’s the banks all over again!

Sainasdabury’s will be the RBS of supermarkets - a big bloated mismash of pointlessness that goes titsup. The knock-on effects will be…

Corbyn will nationalise it.

Tezzbags will be forced to buy the struggling Co-op. But will then be too big, so it’ll hack itself up and re-establish Safeway or Somerfield or Gateway as a TSB-esque supposedly friendly local option.

Aldi & Lidl will merge and devise an even shitter logo than they each already have.

Morrisons will hang in there, apparently unscathed, but only due to a hugely dodgy finance deal with some Russian oligarchs.

All the independent grocers will get together to set up Food Store Day and sell overpriced limited edition fruit and veg that everyone says tastes warmer.

State of that:

The first thing that came to mind when I saw it is this, just round the corner from me (admittedly not empty at the moment, but…):

Wouldn’t take much imagination to say that, being a retail park, the whole thing is an abomination. Fair enough. But the shops (M&S and Next outlets, Pets At Home, Currys, Argos, Home Bargains, Poundstretcher, B&M, that sort of thing) in the two buildings at the front are all fairly bustling and, against all odds, there’s almost a sense of community and place to be had there. Could be worse. The B&Q at the back right doesn’t really need to be there and has car park space that’s at least three times too big, but seems to be a going concern, so hey ho.

It’s that unit at the back left that grinds my gears. Used to be a Big W until Woolies went bust. A ridiculous use of space in that part of the city. Sat unused for a bit. Then Tesco took it on. And it’s always empty. Not really surprising. There’s an Asda across the road (within a busy shopping centre), there’s a Morrisons, Lidl, and Co-op within spitting distance and, oh yeah, two other massive Tescos less 5 mins drive away in either direction.

SUCH A WASTE OF SPACE.

There’s room for an entire community to be built, with homes, shops, facilities, all sorts. But the height of ambition for that site seems to be for a fucking huge shed full of nothing with a car park in front taking up as much space again. It’s right next to a bloody railway linking Glasgow & Edinburgh, too. Could’ve added a new station. Could’ve done a lot of things. As it is, to rub salt in the wounds there’s gonna be a new dual carriageway inner ring road along the line of a disused railway. Cos nothing says inner city community building like a big fucking road down the middle of it.

tl;dr - FUCK YOU, YOU VIOLENTLY ANTI-HUMAN BIG SHEDS WITH YOUR HELLISH CAR PARKS AND YOUR ANTISOCIAL ROADS NEEDED TO SERVE IT ALL.

Retail Park hell you say? Welcome to Tamworth!

Let’s build a load of supermarkets and retail parks next to each other, all with their own car parks and fuck all in the way of pedestrian infrastructure. What could possibly go wrong?
They’re on about building another load at the top right-ish of the photo, with the access being straight off that slip road from the A5, which is frankly ridiculous.

Bought some Sainsbury’s brand digestives just now. They’re basically rich tea biscuits. Fucking shocking. It really is the worst supermarket going isn’t it?
