β€œThe octopus will carry its mobile shelter where ever it goes until it is stolen by a larger more aggressive octopus. We have watched octopus battles rage for several minutes over a shoe, tin can and empty shells”

Also scallops swimming

So it’s ocean week apparently, ocean creatures are great, let’s talk about them :blowfish:

this is proper thick, but I didn’t realise scallops could even swim. just thought they sat there or something, waiting for me to eat them

#3

They can go really fast! And make adorable little clicking sounds. Scallops are great 10/10 bivalves

#4

Hold the fucking phone, scallops swim?!

#5

They do! they have a shitload of blue eyes too, they’re actually such interesting animals!

#6

Amazing, and so tasty :grinning:

#7

A fluffy sea friend.

#8

Haha they’re really cool, I tried a scallop once and didn’t like it, probably because nobody eats seafood in our family and we probably overcooked it

#9

:sob: :sob:

#10

Love this absolutely mad prehistoric frilled shark bastard to bits.

#11

Also, the absolutely horrendous shit that is the spider crab. Magnificent.

#12

No thanks, they’ve got the carapace from one in the museum in town, which our daughter thinks is awesome but it freaks me right out.

#13

It’s cute! I used to have a pet crab about 10 years ago, called it citizen snips after the one in futurama. One of the great mysteries of life is the day we found him in the kitchen when there is no way out of the tank. He was scuttling on the floor and my mum put him back in the tank and he stayed still in the tank. I said he was dead but my mum said he’s probably just a bit scared after his adventure. Next morning he was still in the same position, rip crab. we had a mini funeral, he’s somewhere underground in the back garden

#14

really like those crabs that sing songs in jamaican accents and play the clams like steel drums

#15

Understandable, they’re scary looking crustaceans. We got brought to every aquarium in Ireland and Wales and kids so I fell in love with weird crabs. It’s cool that your daughter isn’t scared by them!

#16

Oh, poor Citizen Snips! Crabs are lovely pets, we always had a few in our fish tank, co-existing with the rest of our fish. Loved them so much.

#17

Ikr! They just calmly scuttle along the tank floor sifting through the little rocks <33

#18

Moray eels are pretty great
Have you read this jazzb? https://www.theguardian.com/science/2013/nov/23/book-barely-imagined-beings-caspar-henderson-review
Seems up your street

#19

This looks great! And undersea creatures half the time really do seem like someone’s just made them up

Just read a book about shells called Spirals in Time. One of the best bits was all about hermit crabs and how they will stick anemones onto their shells as protection. Then, when they have to change shells, they’ll take the anemones off their old one and stick them to their new one. Here’s a video with an annoying voiceover:
