September 2018 Film DiScussion thread

Searching - Bit disappointed in all honesty, strip away the gimmick (which Unfriended: Dark Web does a lot more inventively) and you’re left with a pretty generic, daft thriller which is absolutely fine but I had expectations for something a bit better for some reason.

Looks like Hollywood is ready to pick up on my idea for a buddy cop comedy with Alison Brie and Brie Larson (possibly called THE BIG CHEESES - feel free to use that studio bosses)

Thought Cold War was really good. Like a much better One Day. Much preferred it to Ida though that was a bit relentlessly grim for me. Some absolutely incredible shots in there, the eagle eye view of the truck which looks just like the chapel masonry, Zula in the water, Notre Dame, the wind in the final shot. Lead actress looks so much like Jennifer Lawrence it actually gets a bit distracting.

Just out from seeing Cold War as well - it’s brilliant. Not a second wasted and loved the coldness of it. Looked amazing too, obvs.

I now can’t get the Janelle Monae song of the same name out of my head.

Cold War was way more relentlessly grim than Ida!

No way, nothing is bleaker than the story of the murdered family and the aunt killing herself

Touch of Evil is ace. Wouldn’t mind seeing The Trial, seeing as I’m rereading the novel (I’m really curious what a film adaptation would even look like)

fuckign love ordet. carl theodore dreyer is the greatest. have you seen getrud?

Saw Cold War on Saturday. It was brilliant.

Cameron Post was great. Saw it at The BFI a few weeks ago with a Q&A with the director afterwards.

I’ve got a matinee ticket for Distant Voices, Still Lives on Wednesday. Never heard of it before seeing the trailers for the reissue. It’s had some great reviews.

Seeing Climax in a few weeks. Looking forward to that too.

That’s all I’ve got so far.

It’s in my top 10 of all time, you’re in for a treat.

Had no idea that Greengrass has got a new film coming out on Netflix:

Just remembered the shot of the Stalin banner unfurling behind them as they sing. Incredible!

Loved the shot after the first show when Wiktor is standing against the mirror and you can just about make out Zula’s reflection looking back at him.

Also was thinking during the film that Pawlikowski could make a hell of an old school spy thriller if he wanted to and just found out that the guy who played Wiktor was Danny Boyle’s choice for villain in the new Bond. Daniel Craig you idiot, he would’ve been great!

When Zula started dancing frenetically in that bar to rock n roll, captured in one shot when she ran around joining different partners. Such a rush.
