The problem being that there are relatively few. Interesting new releases. Since March I’ve mainly been catching up with old movies and classics that I had previously missed

I watched Akira for the first time last night. The tone of that film is pretty much perfect slightly tired late night viewing for me - the colour scheme, the fact that they get cyberpunk right and make everything look like utter shit (“cyberpunk cool” is in the lurid griminess imo, not in trying to make stuff look slick and bleeding edge).

As with watching Neon Genesis Evangelion, it was really satisfying to be able to see the extent to which it influenced (or probably influenced) Final Fantasy VII as well.

Rocks - gorgeous

Miss Juneteenth - gorgeous

I see there’s a 2 hour Taiwanese film which deliberately doesn’t have subtitles at LFF this year :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

The thing I love about Akira is that the way it uses background details and minor interactions around the characters to completely nail the feeling of a society on a cliff edge. I find it completely immersive.

It seems to be getting some limited IMAX screenings at the start of next month, I’m gonna go. Pretty excited.

It’s ‘Days’ by Tsai Ming-liang, and if it’s anything like ‘Goodbye, Dragon Inn’ I’ll be surprised if it has much dialogue.

I can’t wait to see it, and pleased I get the chance to thanks to the festival.

Oh yeah, I saw it has barely any dialogue. I just saw a review that said they liked it but they admitted at one point watching it their screen froze and it took them a while to realise

Expected more from A Simple Plan after all the great reviews. Billy Bob was actually not great for the first half, and it ended up making some strange story choices I didn’t really buy. Sam Raimi though, so maybe i shouldn’t be surprised

Fun to see the mum from Freaks and Geeks though, highlight of the film

Fear - quite good actually. Turns very Straw Dogs but Wahlberg and Witherspoon are good

King Kong - not aged well at all but it mustve been amazing at the time. Still a lot to admire and also a lot to shun from it

Radio On - very hypnotic. Basically no story but it has really stayed with me. Sting ruins it

Sure it is James!

I try to be cool and above celebrity news, but this actually warmed my crusty heart.
