September Football Thread: The Road to Elland Road

Asked us to step off Bouaddi so they could take him as a replacement too.

Do wonder if Alonso’s cheesed off with how light their midfield has wound up looking.

Reece James and Valentin Barco starting cm against Arsenal is going to be a bloodbath (1-0, Havertz 72’)

I’d like to think it was a piss-take given all the Maresca acrimony. We’d definitely be petty enough for it, but smart enough?

Barco is better than Bouaddi is a bit I might try out for a month or two. Do actually genuinely think he’s class technically. He’s just also 3’ 10”.

Reckon barco gets run over in most pl games. I know its been 2 years and hes grown but when he played for us he was like a daffodil seed in a breeze

I don’t know how much of a factor height is for midfielders, y’know. How tall was David Silva? If you’ve got the technical ability and a bit of the dog in you you’ll be fine.

Read that as David Villa originally

South Detroit is Canada

Would be better if all the US was Canada, at least for the next two years!

Always got him mixed up with Thomas Gravesen, wasn’t he a soft as shite version?

One was a bald centre mid, the other was a hairy right back

I’d want no part of any state apart from Washington, Oregon and Vermont. Maybe Minnesota.

yeah, Lewandowski to Bayern is the probably the best comparison, but I’m talking generally about transfers that don’t really move the needle for the buyer and completely fuck the seller - I’m not appraising the relative quality of the player. I think Villa was a complete luxury signing for Barca, and the damage it did to Valencia by losing him wasn’t balanced out by being a dominant player at Barca, if you get my drift. He had a decent first season, but dropped off completely in the second, and they pied him off to Atleti shortly after. never during his three seasons was he key to the team.

actually, the Grealish example is probably wrong as iirc, Aston Villa did better without him. but I think Eze to Arsenal stands, since they really did miss him while being a squad filler at Arsenal.

He wasn’t a luxury signing though. Ibrahimovic needed replacing cos he never got on with Pep. They needed a striker and he started most games. Wasn’t just another option to fill out the squad.

yeah, disagree. taken as a whole, that Barca squad won without him before he arrived, won after he left, and I think they would have had the same success had he not been there. obviously an all time great striker, but he didn’t earn that at Barca imho.

If you wanted to go for the luxury unnecessary signing of that era whose departure completely fucked a midtable side surely Fabregas is the one
