Or at the very least, they’re usually easy to find on the venue’s website. and holy shit are they punctual out here!

When Slaves did this, it was well-intentioned but stupid. In this instance, it feels a bit

aha! The definitely are punctual, when I saw Goat Girl last year, I left the house at 7:30 and was back at 9:15!

A fairly balanced take from the Guardian here

Ironically, the Savages gig at The 100 Club that ^that article has as its lead photo was an album launch party at 9 in the morning from memory.

Would deffo have missed that without set times…

The cheap beer thing really irks me. Fine if you have the cheapest pint of Becks around but, don’t call it beer I don’t know anybody who would choose Becks as their go to alcoholic beverage.

If you are wanting people to be in your venue for longer and buy alcoholic drinks have a decent selection. People are probably going to other places beforehand because their drinks selection is poor.

It’s good that the article points out the 100 Club website doesn’t even list the support acts, let alone promote them. The debate about buying drinks as a means of generating income for venues sort of distracts from the much more pertinent points about people’s needs and the logistical issues around attending a gig (work, dinner, babysitting, last train home etc). This could have been better emphasised imo. Besides, these may be factors negatively impacting a venue’s ability to attract punters and generate income in the first place.

I felt it left it on an entirely reasonable tone, which was good:

"The tweets about the disability issues, babysitters, working late, and people living a long way away, I am in tune with that,” Horton says. “And I hadn’t been thinking about that when I tweeted. But we will take into consideration those concerns – the last thing we need to do is push away customers.”

thing is, one or two venues near me, including one that’s closed and reopened a couple of times, have posted about the importance of buying a drink or a coffee (if you can) while you’re at events to help them stay afloat and that’s encouraging, makes you think “yeah, I wanna help out.”

whereas “we’re going to try and trick you into being here for longer so you buy more drinks and we’re going pretend it’s all for a different reason, in support of a different course that our website suggests we actually don’t care a great deal about” will not generate much goodwill in that regard.

i think another important point that’s lost here is that if i’m going to a gig and there are no stage times posted, it’s mildly annoying/inconvenient but fair enough, i don’t think too much more about it.

it’s more the lofty announcement that they’re deliberately stopping because we’re all badly behaved children that rankles.

Maybe they should sell two different priced tickets. One only admits you after a certain time to see the main act, the other you gain entry when you like so you can see the support if you wish. They won’t do this though as they know most people would go for the first option. I enjoy checking out support bands though and would definitely pay a little more to check them out.

So are you saying the later option to see the main act only would be cheaper? I.e. If so that’s the wrong way round.

If it was going to work it would be:
Cheaper early doors tickets in order to see the support band and get footfall through the doors, potentially spending money at the bar. More expensive later entry tickets to subsidise the former. It might work. It’s not too dissimilar to clubnights whereby cheaper early bird tickets have restrictions (eg last entry before midnight). But by doing this you’ve potentially got people through the door early, seeing support DJs and spending at the bar.

Yeah could do it that way.

Would work for on the door sales but absolutely nobody would buy the more expensive ticket in advance surely. Unless you stop letting early-ticket holders in after a certain point. Seems like it would cause carnage for people unexpectedly held up etc.

Looks like they changed their minds on this

Fair enough

What a line-up!

Great to see them supporting up-and-coming acts. Anyone know if No Support are any good?

The more I think about it, No Support might not be the smartest choice of name for an up-and-coming band.

The Doors are on at 7.30, probably the hardest working support band there is.

And they only would have had you standing about in an empty venue for an hour and fifteen minutes.
