I was working at the trade show helping my MA tutor run some workshops, and they had a bit next door to our section where they were doing live screen-printing demonstrations, including that design, and I ended up buying one after seeing them printing it all day hah

It’s a 12 inch hoop. I was worried about not filling it at the start and running out of space at the end.

For 2019 I did one where I divided it into 12 sections so it would look different but I stopped updating it in June because I didn’t have time so I’m still finishing it. My project for this year is pattern only and it’s a lot easier because I’m pretty out of practice at drawing and it’s hard to think if things to draw/sew when you do the same thing every day.

Would love to learn how to do the knots in the thread. My mum used to say something useless like ‘you just roll the thread about between your fingers and it knots up’ but no idea how that’s supposed to work. The upshot is that while I have no issues actually doing the sewing, ‘getting knotted’ is a pain.

At the start I thread the needle fold the thread round so I’m effectively sewing with two threads each time which is the only way I’ve ever really known to do it so I assume is right.

I then have to make a knot at the end of my threads so I just do your normal simplest knot
image
then I do another and try to make it meet that one and another. I don’t reckon one knot is enough to prevent me accidentally pulling the thread through the hole. But obviously doing knot after knot like that is a mess until I can get a proper ‘clump’.

And then when I am finished…bloody hell I can’t ever get that finishing knot right down at the material, it’s the same thing again and it’s messy as fuck.

As such I never do anything that isn’t patching something or unimportant, with the exception of buttons where all my knots are on the inside.

Frustrating…

Gorgeous kitty! He is the spitting image of my mum’s cat, who we have always suspected is part Bengal :smiley_cat:

Hello. I did my first ever cross stitch a couple of weeks ago…

Never done anything like this before in my life! I found the process super calming. I’ve bought a set of threads and other bits and bobs, just waiting on some more aida and then I’m going to start something else.

A year from now your bicycle will be covered in dust in the corner.

I love this. It’s such a relaxing hobby isn’t it?

I’ve had to put mine down for a few days cause when I’m tired, I make mistakes

I just wrap it round my finger 5 or 6 times and then roll it off the top of my finger with my thumb and it makes a tangley knot. It’s not neat but i’m not tying a nice neat knot with thin fiddly thread

Okay cheers I’ll give that a try!

How I do it-

Fold thread back on itself to make a loop
Pinch loop between fingers
Tie basic knot at the base of the loop- if you are right handed take the loop over the thread to the right, and then under it to the left

The loop stops even thin thread from coming through the back.

Also finishing knot?? I always just run the thread under some of the stitches for about a centimetre

Cheers. Will see how I go on the next project

This has finally come out in printed form.

So excited by this!!! Can’t wait to look like a victorian child on christmas day. What fabric would you use for this?

Nice!

I quite like the pattern suggestion of using needlecord, although it might be tricky to do the gathers (I’ve not sewn with needlecord much but I love the feel of it)

I’ve started one of these. Thanks for the idea!

Oh, nice! Are you going to put your progress on Instagram?

My new year’s resolution is to finish my one of these from 2019… I got up to August and life got in the way.

Yes I will instagram it. There is a large risk that I’ll have lost interest by February but we’ll see!

What’s your insta name? I’ll be interested in following. It might motivate me too!

@spaceshipped

I really like this idea too and may join in.

I embroidered this a couple of years ago (‘cotton’ themed anniversary gift for my husband. We got married in a pink tin chapel):

Made this little hanging pod for the porch. Going to scale up double and do two large and two small so there’s a row of them. First time quilting and first time doing darts, all thankfully nice and straightforward. Still terrible at attaching binding though, especially on a curve.
