Just gave this a listen through again. Influential obviously but about half of it is naff. Amazing that some people literally think it’s is the best album ever made…

yup

the smile sessions from 2011 is closer to what he was intending to do according the man himself

and it does include this, just brian on his own, take one casually knocking out a song

it’s the most beautiful performance of anything i’ve ever heard

the harmonies under the falling vocal line at the end and the bass line walking around underneath? fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck me that is SO GOOD

can’t find it on youtube sadly

I like the strange studio recordings where he gets stuck in a piano, and a microphone.

Though the segue from Our Prayer/Gee into Heroes & Villains is better on the 2004 solo album.

Fwiw Smile Sessions also > Sgt Peppers.

I assume you’ve read this?

The opening essay about Wilson is very revealing.

I remember watching that. Actually had a VHS of it too that I would revisit.

Depends what you reissue, dunnit? Reissuing an album that everyone’s heard and is widely available in every possible format certainly is pretty pointless.

I suppose it brings a bit more exposure to potential new audiences. Also if I love an album I absolutely lap up all the bonus shit.

The new mix sounds superb, doesn’t it? Can’t remember a better remastering/remix job.

I expect so, with support from The Doors (on at 7 as per usual)

The instrumental She’s Leaving Home is predictably gorgeous.

I generally ignore reissues/remastered versions but I think this is a must buy.

the remixes at times sound surreal.

oh and by the way http://allmediareviews.blogspot.com/2011/12/beach-boys-vs-beatles-note.html

You’ve got a blog? I thought it was just a name!

polite correction: it was strawberry fields forever that caused wilson to work himself into a nervous breakdown which prevented him from releasing an answer to sgt pepper. apparently the first time he heard the song on the radio he said, “now what the fuck do we do?” and burst into tears. trying to figure out how the beatles obtained the sounds they used supposedly drove him into a frenzy of LSD binges and insane overwork.
