it’s generally mild and unlike flu, not infectious

Of course it’s not infectious

Keep on believing what they tell you.

It’s ignorant scaremongering like this that means measles and mumps outbreaks are now commonplace in the UK. Give it a rest.

Not it’s not. It’s unchecked immigration that means measles/mumps/polio/TB outbreaks happen. Everyone else is already immunised.

probably best to ignore this one 'til they go away.

Oh maybe. Just assumed tbh

I’ve put him in the bin. After that guff up there plus his shite remarks in the Ched Evans thread, well.

Yeah I know - it’s just this is what I did my PhD in so I get a bit touchy when people spout dangerous rubbish.

Always take it, its free so…

Yes and I do. Asthmatic so I get it for free. Never had anything bad to come of it. Except a bruise for a couple of days. No idea how effective it is, I still get I’ll and stuff but wouldn’t dream of not taking it.

This is all just wrong tbh. The decision on ‘which one is going to be doing the rounds’ is based on WHO recommendations & research on which four to include. Occasionally they get it wrong as happened a couple of years ago when the strain either evolved or wasn’t matched well.

Indications from the southern hemisphere so far this year are that it’s a good match and as there’s no likely harm from getting the vaccine unless you have an egg allergy, it’s the best protection at a personal, family and population level. Effectiveness was calculated at over 50% last year (so not incredibly ineffective) and it’s mainly marketed by NHS bodies, not big pharma as it’s part of a national campaign.

‘Unchecked immigration’ has seen some cases of TB, but mainly limited to the families of those who have come from high risk countries as it takes a while to become infected. Unlikely to cause an outbreak here at any serious level any time soon. Measles is a completely different issue with the outbreak caused by that nonsense autism link scaremongering reducing immunisation rates back in the 90s. Most mumps is likely linked to the Measles issue with the junk science belief that single rather than combined vaccines would prevent the kids getting autism from them. I’m not sure why polio is on your list as it’s been completely eradicated in the UK and most of the world.

My wife’s a malaria vaccinology research scientist. I find the whole area absolutely fascinating. She uses me as a layman to try her presentations out on so I can give feedback of where I got lost or it got a bit data heavy.

Tell you what though, the working hours, job insecurity, funding chasing, backstabbing and dependency on paper authorship above good science don’t make me envious.

The flu jab is vegetarian friendly, unless you have an issues with eggs.

It’s only the nasal flu vac that contains a gelatin derivative as it’s an attenuated live vaccine and the gelatin is used to stabilise it - and it’s only licenced for use in kids. The injection is inactive and so doesn’t contain gelatin.
