I really liked Drunk Tank Pink, but I’m getting Wolfmother vibes from this. Fingers of Steel was better.

I seem to recall that DTP fared reasonably well on here in the end of year poll. It was probably my most played album of 2021.
I’m not feeling “Six Pack”. Yeah, Fingers of Steel is better. I’m hoping Flood hasn’t messed too much with their sound.
really really like Drunk Tank Pink, some of the more atmospheric stuff was great. Was my fav from the Windmill school of bands before Ants From Up There came out.
Annoyingly missed them last tour, and this year they’re playing a date that clashes with Young Fathers - support from They Hate Change is very cool though!
Last album was great, I’m enjoying six pack, seems different again. Glad they aren’t stuck repeating themselves. Hopefully they play norwich again they are great live.
I almost wrote a sniffy response here to the singles the other day, and I’m glad I didn’t. After a few listens, it turns out they’re great. Has some of the madcap energy of their Christmas single, Baldur’s Gate, which I think is my favourite song by them so far.
Drunk Tank Pink was a shock fave for me, and they were mint live. Seem sound, too. I’m predicting a smash.
Reviews are starting to trickle in and they’re a little mixed (Uncut also gave 5/10 but Mojo gave it 4/5);
Well, on first listen, as one of the reviews said, as third albums go it’s more Ultra Mono than Skinty Fia.
is the first album any cop? I only got into them via Drunk Tank Pink
Same here but yes I like it excepting a couple of tracks. Definitely worth a listen.
Orchid is a stunner on first skim through at least
It definitely has the feel of a band reaching for the next level more than necessarily being there. Stick Skinty on after and Shame sound much younger.
That said, the singles grew on me a lot, and although I still hear that strain, I think it’s well-intentioned/largely endearing. Mono sounded burned out and cynical to me
I don’t really get the Fontaines comparisons, i think they’re a lot more adventurous/interesting. Really liking this album.
I think the thing to remember with this album is that it was recorded live aside from one track (Orchid, I think). It does sound very much that kind of thing. Plan on giving it a couple more run throughs today.
I enjoyed my first listen through more than I expected after reading this thread. Granted, the louder/faster tracks stood out more, but I’d be the first to complain if it was all one paced. I think this will grow.
I don’t really get the Fontaines comparisons (I like both), aside from them both being “guitar bands” that emerged at similar times. That’s where the commonality ends for me.
I don’t think Fontaines was being used as a stylistic comparison, I think it was about the third album jump they made vs other bands whose third album is more of a damp squib
I’m really enjoying the new album. At first I thought it wasn’t such a step up after drunk tank pink, but on repeated listens I’m really digging it. Good album, good band.
Smart move making the artwork so nice that I keep sticking the album on.
Thought this was a good interview - somehow it brought me up short that they’re just hitting their mid-twenties.
Anyone sseing them on the current tour ? Leeds and Barcelona for me.
