I only ever knew The Pogues from Fairytale of New York for so long and hated that song. But watching The Wire slowly turned me onto them. Body Of An American was the only one i’d listen to for obvious reasons. It took me until a couple of years ago to properly listen to them and I will be doing so again today.
RIP.
Very very sad.
A Pair of Brown Eyes has been a bit of an obsession for me this year (my most played song according to Spotify!). An absolutely incredible songwriter.
Ah. He’s away. Hope he’s at peace.
Sad, but expected, news
I always found it fascinating that he & Thomas Dolby were like best pals at school and hung out with each other and were the music geeks in class and both had succesful but wildly different careers
RIP The Irish Rover
Kissinger and Shane MacGowan in the same 24 hours is truly a “lord giveth/taketh away” moment.
Never knew this! Both great in their own way.
We walked him to the station in the rain
We kissed him as we put him on the train
And we sang him a song of times long gone
Though we knew that we’d be seeing him again
This is one of the most brutally effective vocal performances of all time. I’d honestly argue that if it doesn’t make you cry you’ve failed to understand the song.

RIP
It’s a shame Thomas Dolby’s blog isn’t up any more, there was loads of good little anecdotes about him
One of the best songwriters of his generation. I think people miss how brilliant those Pogues records were and how unique his ability was.
You can’t help feeling that he could have achieved so much more. Nick Cave is almost an exact contemporary and you feel that he has got the full value from his talent due to getting his demons under control.
So sad that it didn’t got that way for Shane - I never stopped hoping for some amazing late career classic album. Saddest of all for his family that he has died far too young of course.
The best love song ever
