This isn’t unique amongst sportspeople, but one of the things that impressed me about Warne, outside of his obvious cricketing ability, was how willing he was to share tips and do pieces with younger players during breaks in play, and how much he obviously enjoyed it.
I remember him doing a piece on wrist spin with a couple of kids and his enthusiasm as they got better with each attempt was really infectious. He always managed to judge the tone just right.

It was absolutely wonderful.
I remember my brothers saying “why the fuck do you like cricket, it’s rubbish”. I told them to sit down and watch it for a day…it ended up being one of the matches that went to the last ball on the last day, or something like that…ever since then they have been hooked!

I think to be truly great, you have to be like this - you have to appear that you truly love the sport, beyond winning.
Sure, it’s impressive to be really good and a ruthless winner, but if you’re just a drone who has no time for other people you’re not likely to transcend your sport, which is something the truly great always manage

Really surprised he only averaged 17 with the bat. Felt like he was a constant thorn and regularly chipped in with annoyingly useful contributions. Was it something he just improved on later in his career?
He only really batted well against England. It’s quite funny to see his yearly averages, as they seem to peak every time there’s an ashes series.
