I hated him at the time because he made a mockery of our batting line but he was world class, an icon and clearly very passionate about the sport 52 years old as well fucking hell

he could definitely get annoying on comms, but if there was someone there to corale him into talking about spin bowling especially, or the technical and tactical sides of cricket, he had an incredible brain for the game and was brilliantly insightful. could explain quite complicated things at a level that very casual fans could understand, which is so rare.

just thinking that I started off bowling leg/wrist spin as a kid
and it canāt have been anyone English who inspired me to do that

What a wrist that dude had. Hated him as a kid because he had no regard for any of my favourite batters. Seemed like a bit of a dick at times but as a cricketer he was a true inspiration. Weāll probably never see another leggy move the ball like that, with that much control ever again.

Dont know much about him but i once edited a celebrity golf tournament and he was pretty terrible and the chain of expletives heād come out with after each increasingly awful stroke often had me crying with laughter. He barely said anything in the final edit because every word was pretty much just cunt this and cunt that.

Really gutted. Met him once while working in a clothes shop in the early 00s and he was super great. Really engaging and chatty - we all knew who he was but didnāt talk about cricket or anything, just general funny stuff.
When heād finished buying his gear he asked if he could smoke in the shop and we were all ahh ā¦no ā¦ um no mate but he was totally cool and had about three fags out of the shop door by the time weād folded his stuff up, still chatting to us all the time. One of my favourite memories of working in retail. RIP Shane

To my slight shame this was the first thing that popped into my head too. Then I looked him up and realised he was exactly one day younger than my wife.
I do remember reading the previews of his first Ashes series where they did pen portraits of the new players turning up, and it feels weird to remember him being described as an interesting prospect rather than a potential all time great. It canāt have hurt that even a rabid England fan asked if forced to choose which player from their team was going to be made to look like an utter chump, would definitely have plumped for gatting.
Rip to the guy who made leg spin cool again, single-handedly.
