I 100% agree with you that if you put the effort in it’s easy to appreciate his skill at shot selection and execution. Not seen a massive amount of his matches to date, but I think I would lean towards O’Sullivan getting past him, just on pure weight of scoring. That said I do think Williams had a good game plan to blunt him, and while he was playing well enough to execute it it was working, and you’d think Selby would be capable of doing the same.

Yeah you’re right. I just think Selby got in his head in 2014 and he hasn’t really recovered from it. Too close to call - will be fascinating!

Also worth noting the schedule:

Selby/O’Sullivan’s going to be a tight finish the night before the final. Wilson’s going to be going in having had a walkover in the first round and should be easily wrapping it up in the final session. He’ll be nice and fresh; neither O’Sullivan or Selby will be!

(I’m typing this like it’s a done deal for Wilson, but worth noting that McGill leads their head to head which is interesting)

how many ranking events has wilson won though? he’ll be shiteing it

3 or so? He will be bricking it but he’s been to a Crucible semi before. Masters final too. He’s got a solid temperament. He’ll be alright.

not sure this mcgill / wilson match is looking like a classic

Wilson has a face tailor-made for looking disappointed.

he’s making a bit of an arse of this

Commentator a short while ago (Virgo?):

“I don’t know who’s pressing the button for the applause. But (a) 69 break? I would have liked a little bit of applause for that!”

parrot and taylor are commentating the match on the beeb

virgo is stuck in spain under quarantine afaik

It was Taylor. I guarantee you he didn’t mean what it seemed like he meant.

You’re no doubt correct, but just listen to the way he says it!

the artificial crowd seem very excited today

I thought it initially too, but Taylor is too strait-laced for such things. He just meant it was a decent break.

I find the applause thing really weird. Why are the acoustics of it so bad? And for me, putting in fake applause for play on the other table is even weirder.

I’ll tell you what else I don’t understand. Why do they have to have their own rests, when they spend the whole match literally putting their hands in the same place as each other on the table?

dunno

When I typed that I wondered if they had to hand sanitise after each visit. But I’d have thought I’d have noticed.

Excellent call this.

(Long way to go)

Weird thing I’ve found about watching McGill in the last couple of days is that I constantly get the impression that he could miss any shot at any moment. The difference yesterday was that in almost all of the frames that moment didn’t come until he had the frame comfortably won. My guess is that a 6-2 head start for him will just make a match of it.

I mean on one level you could say that not having made a century break in the tournament is an interesting statistical fluke. On another level you could say you’ve got a player who can’t perform consistently enough for long enough to get one at the moment.
