I vaguely remember some noise around Matt Groening’s choices and maybe a Sonic Youth/Thurston Moore (??) one which was a lot of similar noise artists and was quite repetiive. Memory is cloudy though
Haha, that was exactly what it reminded me of too!
Just gonna share some fun ATP memories, in no particular order
I dunno, loads more. Great festival. Dickhead organiser.
Pavement was fun but this had a much better line up in retrospect. Stooges, toumani diabate, deerhunter, the xx, joanna newsom, thee oh sees (no idea who they were then so probs would have missed it but still). Think Pavement sold out before any other acts were announced.
There was a day of I’ll Be Your Mirror in 2011 where I saw a run of Godspeed, Liars, Beach House, Swans, Grinderman and Portishead. Could have seen Caribou afterwards but I was far too drunk and needed to be taken home.
loved grinderman fucking up the opening to their first song at their live debut and having to start over
EPMD at nightmare before christmas 2009 were amazing.
2005 Mars Volta ATP blew my mind apart. Loved it.
Enjoyed all of the others immensely but that MV one was really just the best.
yeah this, lineup was just incredible
My new house, you should seeeeee my new house
It was my first ATP as well, and I was so ready for it.
My ex and friend were too hungover to deal with Godspeed so had to sit on the grass outside Got right to the front of that Alan Moore & Stephen O Malley thing. Was total bobbins but had to stay for the duration. Portishead were spectacular
In the end I saw Steve Reich, Amon Tobin’s ISAM set and MF DOOM for free (having been refunded), and Oneman, Darkstar, Factory Floor, Oneohtrix Point Never, Blanck Mass, and Flying Lotus (backed by The Weeknd) for a fiver, so it wasn’t all bad.
Remember seeing poptimusgrime’s name and phone number in marker pen in one of the toilets with a lewd message so texted him with some silly DiS references and refused to tell him who it was
Yeah as a non-Londoner I didn’t have the luxury of going for any of the replacement events, sadly. Got to the site with ample time to see Nicolas Jaar and Amon Tobin but spent the next hour and a half in a queue. It’s not a day I remember fondly.
I know we’ve moved on from discussing the article, but absolutely delighted about this bit:
Kevin Shields [My Bloody Valentine] is not exactly a laugh a minute. It should be fun, but he had all these demands.
Hope be brought his chinchillas
“Man famously known for perfectionism not impressed by amateur, disorganised and haphazard organizer”
“he had all these demands… like getting paid as agreed!”
I love how he makes out the National’s manager to be demanding. By the time they played in 2013, they had sold out places like the Royal Albert Hall and Brixton Academy, and High Violet was a top 5 US album.
Imagine them turning up to Butlin’s and meeting him. To be honest learning about it now I’m surprised they even made it to the stage.
