my kids are nine and six at primary school, and “stitch” is a thing. they were talking about it a few days ago, and so i naturally thought one of three things - a youtube creator, a silly horror game on roblox, or cross stitch.
but nope, it’s this guy from the seminal 2002 Disney Animated film “Lilo & Stitch” and the subsequent sequels, 2003’s Stitch! The Movie, 2005’s Lilo &Stitch 2: Stitch has a Glitch and 2006’s Leroy & Stitch.
why? what has caused this also-ran shite 2002 Disney kids movie to be “back”?
Been all over Primark for a few years now
The inevitable live action remake been in development hell so promo has been elongated
He’s cute and the original film is good
Ohana means you never get left behind so he’s here to stay
Thought this too until the wee one got obsessed with them about a year ago and now grudgingly have to admit that the first movie is actually pretty fucking good.
Think it’s always had something of a cult following. Stitch has been a consistently popular character in the parks in terms of merch and character appearances. I actually think Moana sent a lot of people back to L&S as well, and now it’s readily available on streaming it’s been reassessed as a minor classic of Disney’s late period, especially compared to what came out around it (Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Brother Bear).
Treasure Planet is good fun imo, some really lovely design stuff in there. Atlantis is really interesting too, it’s not the best film but the way it uses Mignola’s art makes it worth a watch.
Quite excited to see what kind of CGI Eldritch abomination they’ll come up with for the “live action” remake, tbh. Hoping for near Cats levels of uncanny valley.
Sincere reply: I genuinely think it is nice that there is one film in the Disney canon where the main relationships are between a girl and her pet and a girl and her sister and it’s set somewhere that’s not the usual European castles and villages.
I mean, Disney hasn’t really made a stereotypical “Disney” film in a long time. You could put Frozen in the “white heroine falls in love” genre (though I’d argue that’s not really the main plot of the film), but aside from that, it’s only Tangled until you go back to the Beauty and the Beast which came out in 1991.
