it’ll be 50 tomorrow!

Seeing that age certificate reminds me that, when I first played FFVII, I was under 11 and so I used to keep the case in a drawer in case the police came round doing a check-up of illegal game ownership. I thought there was a genuine risk I might be arrested.

My love of this game was so well-known at school that, in maths, the teacher asked me during class to choose a number between one and ten. Simply choosing seven caused another pupil to groan that I’d picked seven because of Final Fantasy 7.

Oh god, I used to replicate the arm movements of the character models whenever jumping off things.

This is why I’m so single

Here she be!

Fingers crossed I still have a save, but I have a sneaky feeling I don’t. Attempted a replay 2/3 years ago, following a guide to make sure I found all those posters and got all the steal enemy materia before I went past zones I couldn’t access after I’d left. In my original play I’d never managed to beat a weapon, but got me a gold chocobo.

On my replay I got as far as the crashed submarine and was grinding everyone’s limit breaks up, think Cloud was on about level 55. Then the laser crashed on my (old bloated 40Gb original PS3) machine and I replaced it with a new unit just so I could download GTA5. Not sure I started again since. Think Skyrim took over my timesink time. I bet it looks like absolute arse. Startign to shudder at the train graveyard. This will take some motivation.

There was a great feature in Polygon earlier this year on the history of FFVII. Well worth a read.

Was already planning on playing through it during Winter II. Didn’t realise it was twenty years since it had been released.

I first played it after we won a PS2 in a prize draw in our local supermarket. We could never afford a PS1, only a Sega Megadrive that my brothers and I played to death, so a PS2 dropping from the sky like that was a huge event.

We played the demo disc day and night, absolutely rinsing the two and a half minutes of SSX for ages. Then a schoolfriend lent me FFVII and that was it. I was hooked. I beat it twice in quick succession and then played it again, getting all the Materia, Limit Breaks, beating all the Weapons and getting everyone to level 99.

I’ve since played through it once a year, usually during winter months when the weather is bad here. It’s still my favourite FF, even though FFX runs it close. I utterly love it and always will.

I’ve got a feeling I got given FF7 by my dad. He got one before I did, and AFAIK remember his initial games were Tomb Raider 2, FF7 and maybe a FIFA. He hated FF7 and never even got out of the first reactor cos of all the random battles. Took me a while for it to sink in really with me as I was mad into the Broken Sword 2 demo he also had.

When I got a PS six months later or so I grabbed FF7 off him and just barrelled through it over my GSCE summer. Always remember that New Radicals single being on Radio 1 all the time. Whenever I hear it I think of sitting in the summer house surrounded by untouched textbooks, racing Chocobos.

After I “finished” it (and I really think I might still have a memory card somewhere), I bought Baldur’s Gate for the PC. Then Warcraft 2.

All downhill since then.

Never actually got beyond the part where it starts to be open world. Maybe now is the time

I love how this game is basically responsible for the RPG genre becoming a sort of popular thing in the West. Or at least Europe.

I loved that Broken Sword 2 demo as well! The reflection of the dock lights on the water, oh man.
