Her Union Chapel gig around Lovetune time is one of the most intense musical experiences I’ve ever witnessed. Still to this day, I’ve no idea if it was pure raw emotion or some theatrical experience (pretty sure it was the former).

I wasn’t a big fan of Narrow but really liked the Sugarbread EP. Kind of forgot all about it until I checked out what she’s been up to the past 5 years. Not a lot according to wikipedia. Will check out her latest.

Hopefully I didn’t buy the last copy.

My purchase went through, so hopefully all good!

Was that at Bush Hall? That was my first show of hers, where they had the chairs out for the audience, and in one (or more?) of the songs she came walking amongst the audience during one of the scarier songs with the lights all turned off/flashing. Unless I’m misremembering part of this!

I think I was at that show.

The show I’m thinking of was in some little concert space somewhere just off the Southbank near Waterloo / London Bridge.

She played at Purcell Rooms (RFH) not too long afterwards also. Will be interesting to see if she has the same intensity now or not.

I’m looking forward to her gig even more now that I like the sound of the support act: some German chap called Jungstötter

Here’s a video of him with Soap&Skin singing backing vocals:

Who went to the EArtH gig last night? Gig of the year so far for me.

Anja and her band were stunning. Mesmerising. The atmosphere was for the most part intentionally warm, subtle and delicate to suit their music perfectly. They could also turn it to cold, loud and piercing at their choosing. Brilliant.

The last album was amazing. If you haven’t heard it you’ve missed one of the best of last year. Please check it out. Surrounded was played perfectly. Wonder and Voyage Voyage from her second album were spellbinding. Wonder was performed perfectly with most of her band providing backing vocals.

That gig was just amazing. Simply stunning.

A deserved standing ovation.

This thread needed a bump. One of the best albums of last year and probably the gig of the year so far. I won’t apologise for the bump and also posting a similar review on the “Last night’s gig was” thread.

It was incredibly good. So pleased to hear Wonder, Me And The Devil, and the Apparat song Goodbye. The songs from the new album worked even better live than on the album, although her first album is still easily my favourite. It missed a couple of my favourite songs from that album, but it was just so good seeing her again and seeing her look so happy and comfortable. Previously she was more distant and separated from the audience I think. She’s always on my Must See list anyhow.

As for the venue, I quite liked it (other than the sore bum/floor aspect). Are there two different parts of the venue then? Not sure if this was the ‘good’ or ‘bad’ one.

It was the “good” venue. The “bad” venue is a big space lacking atmosphere downstairs. It’s about 50% bigger than The Garage.

I really like the upstairs “good” venue. Saw Poppy Ackroyd a few months ago which was great…but last night was something special.

Yeah, for a show that only included 1 song from the album I love, that was incredible. So much artistry, ambition and passion.
