As some of you will have already seen on FB/insta, former DiSer nice_squirrel / Sophie has sadly passed away very recently after a long illness.
Enough people on here knew her both online and in person that it felt like the right thing to do to post something about it. If you were on the old boards and especially if you were ever at a Zonino! or anything of the sort, you will probably remember Sophie for her unrelenting kindness and enthusiasm.
I thought maybe this thread could be a place for people to share memories of Sophie or anything else you feel like you need to express. I’m posting this on the Social board instead of in Serious Matters but it’s still under the ssp tag for obvious reasons.
My thoughts are with her husband bamos and their little one today. Absolutely tragic news.
Hi folks, been a long time but thought it apt to post here as it was thanks to this forum that I was fortunate enough to meet and become friends with Sophie. She absolutely radiated positivity and I’ve such fond memories of being in It’s Fiction with her, Gareth, Jamie, El and Vikram.
We only met the once - I think at drinks you were hosting on a trip to London, WR? - but she was so radiant and full of laughter, the kind of person you instantly trust.
Sending love to everyone on here who is affected (and obviously bamos and jnr)
I met Sophie briefly in Cardiff (along with monpot?) at a clubnight maybe in 2006/7 - she was super friendly and kind, and said I was her favourite new DiSer Really lovely person and a great board member.
I didn’t know her as well as others on here, but I guess it’s testament to someone’s nature that they can make relative outsiders feel welcome. Hope all of you who knew her better are bearing up x
Im sorry i posted in the other thread without thinking - i’d forgotten she was on here a lot as i knew her in real life and only crossed over on here a bit. Sorry for any upset i caused.
Soph was just one of the nicest people i’ve ever known. heartbreaking
Such sad, awful news. She was one of the first DISers I ever met, and I just instantly felt comfortable around her like others have said - she was just so lovely. Made a point of getting to as many nights as I could when she was DJing as she was always so good. Had so much fun dancing with her when we saw CRJ together and it’s in that spirit that I hope I’ll always remember her.
Absolutely this. I was never super close with either her or bamos, but once they realised I was in London at the time they invited me to their wedding immediately. There’s a lot I don’t remember from the reception after the free bar, but I very vividly remember Sophie outing all us internet nerds in her speech – saying to her family/other friends that if they spoke to someone at the party who claimed to know her and bamos “from gigs”, they were absolutely an internet friend.
Anyway yeah, just wanted to agree that she made everyone feel so welcome and included and that’s a really special ability that I admire more and more the older I get.
Such sad news. Chatted briefly and no more than 4 or 5 times during the period where Zonino and Something Serious were regular parts of my social calendar and she was always lovely and friendly.
Absolutely agree with those who say she was always a welcoming and lovely individual to be around. I didn’t speak to her as often as I should have done given how often I met up with that crowd around the early 2010s, but she really stood out as one of the friendliest people you could know, both online and in person.
Thank you for sharing this, but so sad to hear. I think I only met Sophie briefly at a Zonino, but she was incredibly friendly and welcoming to a soft-spoken internet loser, as was bamos. I don’t know what else to say.
As everyone else has said, just one of the sweetest and friendliest people ever. Thinking of her daughter & husband, they’ve been through so much already. Thinking of her sister too, who’s a sweetheart.
