ah it’s Blue Chicago Moon for me:

he’s gotten so good at hiding it
even he does not admit it
that glittering flash in his eyes
makes it look like he might be alright
but if the blues are your hunter
then you will come face to face
with that darkness and desolation
and the endless endless endless endless endless endless depression
but you are not helpless
you are not helpless
try to beat it (X2)
and live through space’s lonliness (X2)
you are not helpless (X2)
i’ll help you to try, try to beat it
i’ll help you try, try to beat it (X3)

That’s a close second for me. It’s a much more comforting song compared to Ring the Bell’s head-down gritted-teeth vibe. Jason Molina was such, such a great songwriter.

I Want To Be Well by Sufjan is a really interesting one. He’s said that between Ilinois and Age Of Adz, he had this mystery ailment that never got diagnosed, where he was physically sick and debilitated for really long periods of time. With that going on, and all his other personal shit in Age Of Adz, stuff was just really on top of him for that album, and then that crazy masterpiece came out of the other side of it. I fucking love that album.

I really like this song.

Here’s a little ditty I wrote about the subject

This whole album. Dark as anything.

my favourite Middleton lyric is from this one

I’ll write a good song
Just give me more time
It’s easy hating yourself
It’s hard making it rhyme

The black bird, the dark slope is one of my favourite Los Camp songs. Also:

“Ecce Homo” by Titus Andronicus. (Just absolutely brilliant, especially the way he ties everything together near the end with “and that’s a lot to say without a word”)

“Dendron” by The Hotelier (Sometimes I think this is the best song of the decade so far)

“Raspberry Cane” by Youth Lagoon (Another song of the decade candidate)

“Whenever You Breathe Out, I’m Breathing In (Positive / Negative)” by Modest Mouse

“Slow Show” by The National

“Perfect Blue Buildings” by Counting Crows

“I Got Shit” by Pearl Jam

“Normal Like You” by Everclear

I could do this all day. (And a big yes to Electro-shock Blues.)

Only found that album last year when the reissue came out and have been playing it over and over. Amazing (and bleak) from start to finish.

Planning For Burial should be all over this thread:
