Songs that give you jump scares

In Sonic Youth Album Club, it’s been Confusion Is Sex week. Every time I listen to this, it terrifies me when the sound suddenly switches, especially if I’m listening in ear phones.

Any other songs that make you jump when you listen?

The volume difference on the distorted guitar towards the end of Mama Gina by Shellac always catches me off guard, particularly since it feels like the song is fading out at that point.

Thinking more of the video here - but at 3:29 when Mr Jagger rocks up to really send this song hellbound.

Scott’s reading of the line “What’s up doc” is quite something (4.09ish)

When one of my pals refer to ‘that song that makes me shit myself’ I always know they are referring to Mogwai’s ‘like herod’

Bit near the end of this. Even when I know it’s coming.

It’s a goodun’!

My kids managed to sleep through all of their Bluedot set except for that bit. Youngest somehow stayed asleep but it terrified my eldest. Fair play to the lads, it sounded like the world ending.

Used to love sticking LCW on and dozing off when I had a decent lecture gap in uni. This would always wake me up with a start.

Always wait in dread for the bit on Future Sound of London’s ‘Among Myselves’ at the 00:58 mark. I can never remember EXACTLY when it hits, and after all the blissful ambience that happens before it, i’m sure they’ve mixed it LOUD for effect.

I like how they’ve played it pretty much every time I see them. They know what they’re doing

There’s a sudden orchestral stab midway through Into the Night by Julee Cruise that once made me yelp out loud walking home. This in turn gave a fright to some guy walking past me

Why not stick a massive slab of distorted guitar right at the end of a long fade-out?
