For the most part I think Sonic Youth are bad, which makes it all the more frustrating that they were able to come up with something as great as this.

I think I loathe every Animal Collective song except for this one.

Just went and casually made a brilliant M83 track.

For a ‘band I don’t like’, U2 have realeased some tunes:

New Year’s Day
Sunday Bloody Sunday
Hold me Thrill me Kiss me Kill me
Electrical Storm (William orbit remix)
Mofo

I’m confused… this is a fairly typical SY song.

I mean there are plenty of Sonic Youth songs that don’t sound like this, but it’s not exactly an outlier is it?

Interesting, to me it feels like a massive, massive outlier. To me most of their songs feel really boring and like they’re missing purpose, but this one is so propulsive and focused and has some real emotion behind it. (Teenage Riot, Silver Rocket, Orange Rolls Angel’s Spit are good too, but mostly everything else leaves me completely cold.)

It’s this for me:

Do you not like this?

This is coming from the biggest Smashing Pumpkins fan in the world, let’s not forget.

I usually find Embrace dreadful, but love this.

Even though it’s basically just this:

Which is essentially this, albeit bent and twisted out of shape beyond recognition…

Neighborhood #1 tunnels is amazing. Never heard another band where their first song on their first album blows me away and then the rest of their stuff leaves me completely cold or is just very dull

That’s one of the better ones actually. It still feels like there’s a little something missing, but it’s pretty good.

It’s not just because of what Kim said though, I’ve been able to get past that sort of thing with other bands (I think Soundgarden released 3 A+ albums in a row and Range Life is even my favorite Pavement song.) I’ve really tried with them but their music doesn’t stir up anything in me, aside from the odd song.

Yeah I’ll second you on sonic youth. They have some good stuff and daydream nation is good but the rest of their output largely leaves me cold

Have you listened to the stuff that came before Daydream Nation? I think EVOL and Sister are both cracking albums. The post Daydream Nation records are hit and miss - they seem to fluctuate between wanting to ride the mainstream alt-rock boom and wanting to re-assert their avant garde credentials- but in their early days they were just a great, thrilling experimental rock band.

Big fan of this David Guetta oddity.
