Songs you shouldn't like: Hip hop edition

Thought i’d start some hip hop focused threads today considering it’s 50th anniversary.

Not calling these guilty pleasures because I hate that phrase, but what are the hip hop songs that you know deep down are kinda shit but you actually like. I’ll start with this…

Yeah Thrift Shop and Ceiling Can’t Hold Us are legit great songs. No guilt.

This tho

This is a bad song, everything about it is bad. I like it!

Something about the extreme naffness, some nostalgia for boys at school taking it seriously. “Put the pipe to your melon” ffs that’s a great lyric.

I opened a private browsing tab to get the video but I listened all the way through.

A song that is fully 100% annoying, but also an ear worm I can never resist. Who cares about irritating vs catchy when you can be both at once!

It’s kind of endearingly shit and the bit where the eagle screeches always makes me laugh.

I’ve been down so many drift phonk wormholes which led me to Freddie Dredd, fun beats, woeful lyrics, 4chan-ass aesthetic, hated it, listened to some tracks on a loop.

Like whatever you like

So many laugh out loud moments, hard to tell what’s intentional and what’s not, and so dumb but gets me pumped every time.

To say that this is ‘lyrically somewhat problematic’ would be an understatement…

Son of Bazerk : the only true voice (and I mean voice, not only rapping) in the whole history of the genre ?

We can’t mention Bubba Sparxxx without referencing this amazing review of his car crash of a UK debut gig:

“Within five minutes he’s off. Before disappearing, he announces he has to “go take a dump”, adding defiantly, “And I ain’t even gonna wipe my ass!” Nice.”
