Will this be good? There aren’t many highly quotable music films with such a legacy. Hopefully they’ll get it right.
Rob Reiner, director of the original 1984 release as well as the sequel, was speaking to comedian Richard Herring on the latter’s RHLSTP (Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre Podcast). Reiner told Herring, after the latter expressed his admiration for This Is Spinal Tap, that “everybody’s back” for the sequel and that filming would begin at the end of February.
The original film’s main cast of Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest are due to return, although Tony Hendra, who played cricket-bat-wielding manager Ian Faith, died in 2021. The plot will reportedly centre on Faith’s death, after which his widow inherits a contract that requires the band to do one last concert. Reiner is also due to return in the character of film-maker Marty DiBergi, a figure supposedly based on Martin Scorsese, who had directed celebrated music documentary The Last Waltz in 1976.
I reckon it could be good - it’s not like any of the main cast have stopped being funny or anything. I bet there’ll be loads of celebrity cameos though and they’ll really drag it down
If there’s a joke in there about Spinal Tap II with roman numerals and someone thinks that the 2 in roman numerals is an 11 then I’m afraid I’ll have to report that I’m out
nothing says funny like loads of celebrity cameos. honestly though feel like they did all the post-tap gags already, which were good! all the interviews in character etc.
They’ve got so much goodwill from me they can do whatever. If I hear it’s good I’ll watch it, if not, I’ll pass. Still remember being a kid watching the DVD outtakes of Spinal Tap - which were often as funny as the main event.
I do prefer Best in Show and Waiting for Guffman though…
