Very rare that this happens, but almost every time it does, I feel it’s unnatural and it’s more performative than an actual way of showing appreciation.
Nothing worse than when someone stands up to start a standing ovation towards the front, then turns around and looks at the rest of the audience like “What, you’re not standing ovationing?”.

I have been one of the early standers in a standing ovation, and later sat down when I realised I was in the minority

I’m not saying that they can’t be sincere, I’ve definitely felt like just fucking doing them sometimes, but there’s something complex about the social dynamics of them, like someone trying to start a conga or a Mexican wave, but more sincere.
At a seated gig it’s a nicer thing if it happens mid-gig at some point, it feels more earned and less “this is what we have to do now” than one at the end.
