Not doing this again.
The Oxfam gods have been kind to me today and saved me roughly £40 and a trip into the city centre, although this only has the first 6 films in so I’ll still need to pick some up at a later date, plus the Solo style ones.
Anyway, can start later with The Phantom Menace (1999), which I have never seen.
It is, but I kind of like to collect films on Blu Ray. I can see that the films are available on Blu Ray in trilogy sets. so I can buy the last 3 when the time comes, plus this set looks really nice. Only a tenner but it has no leaflet in it, but the box looks nice and it’s the actual films that matter.
Thanks for the tip though.
I have this edition! I don’t own a Blu-Ray player though. Sad.
(In fact, I have never owned a Blu-Ray player, I got it at the launch event and I’ve never watched it)
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…
The Phantom Menace (1999).
I don’t know what to say really. Simple as that. It looks amazing. The sound is LOUD (which is good), proper cinematic sound even on a television style screen.
It feels miscast to me. I liked the original trilogy using lesser known actors, making the film the star. Liam Neeson, just no. I’m not buying Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi either fully. Natalie Portman is good, I kind of expected that.
I didn’t find Jar Jar that annoying. More so that character and the whole muppets in space look made me think that G. Lucas was thinking of a Disney pitch years before than multi-billion $ deal was made. Shrewd, or cynical on my behalf?
The little Anakin, I mean, is that Darth Vader? I’m not fully buying that.
I kind of loved the imagery and fact that the film goes for it. The gladiatorial / race sequence is too long, but that would have been existing fan service maybe back in 1999?
I did like the Darth Maul stuff, when the film hints at dark that is good… and needed. I feel it’s an insult a bit to make the film so Disney-esque. The power of Star Wars, to me is the clear good Vs evil vibe you get from the original films, like night and day, that was so clear. This feels muddied and dumbed down in comparison.
It is colourful and lovely to look at. the sound is superb. This doesn’t make it a great movie though. The story probably needs a 2nd viewing to fully understand. The Space shots are wonderful. When it projects speed and darkness I kind of love that.
A franchise name that is literally a license to print money saves it. Take out R2-D2, et-al and it would have failed. Yet, for a film series, that had at this point, had such long gap it succeeds in ways. I wish the cast were unknowns, that the story was easier to grasp and that there was more of Darth Maul. It looks like a computer game rather than a film that you love. I love computer games but this is cinema at a peak, or supposed to be - and it isn’t that.
The film needs a gut punch and true dark moment. Maul almost goes there but you just do not feel this enough. As such it ticks a lot of boxes but doesn’t truly satisfy or engage the viewer.
It is lacking, yet it is STAR WARS… I guess?
6/10.
I remember seeing an Irish Times headline back in the day that was so shit it’s seared into my brain, about a boxer from Clones:
Attack of the Clones(-man)

Go on then.
- The Empire Strikes Back ★★★★★
- The Last Jedi ★★★★★
- A New Hope ★★★★★
- Rogue One ★★★★
- Return Of The Jedi ★★★★
- The Force Awakens ★★★
- The Phantom Menace ★★★
- Revenge Of The Sith ★★★
- Attack Of The Clones ★★
- Solo ★★
- The Rise Of Skywalker ★
I think I agree with this the most. Maybe Solo an extra half star. Reckon there is a good film in there but what they put out wasn’t it.
ESB > RTOJ > R1 > ANH > LJ > FA > ROTS(ith) > PM > ATOTC > ROTS(kywalker)
ANH is where it is purely on the merit of being the first one - I find it quite difficult to get past the horror of some of the dialogue and a lot of quite bad decisions. Its obviously iconic, which makes watching objectively hard, but there is a lot wrong with it. Really badly paced in the first third too (C3PO whinging his way around the desert of Tatooine is not funny or entertaining, it’s just shit).
There are very few films I hate as much as Rise of the Skywalker. Not only an abject moral failure of an enterprise on multiple levels, but also complete pish - made me retroactively dislike the other sequel films and (even worse) made me think the prequels were actually relatively ok by comparison.
Haven’t seen Solo. Suspect it doesn’t exist.
Attack Of The Clones (2002).
Right away, I do not like the title, something more creative than that surely? Hmmm.
However, It looks amazing on Blu Ray, this film is 20 years old, visuals and audio are incredible.
I like the city feel, as such it feels darker than The Phantom Menace. Initially evoking Bladerunner, Cyberpunk (the game) and dare I say it, even Robocop feels.
Fact, this film contains the line “it does not exist”.
I liked it, but I’m still a bit lost with the plot and characters. Dadme isn’t Leia, is she? I never had that issue with Star Wars (A New Hope if you must) when I was 7, I just got that. Must be getting old.
It has a bit of a Game of Thrones feel in look and style. It’s a long film but it fleshes quite a lot out and is pulpy, which is good. Some great set pieces of pure action.
Where the fuck is Chewy? Gimmie Star fuckin’ Wars please. Not Dracula in space. Anakin makes more sense here than in The Phantom Menace as you feel the transition to the Dark, that is quite well done. The existing lore for the original films is pandered to and that leaves a bad taste in the mouth as you feel the business rather than just adrenaline cinema.
Still. Enjoyed it in all honestly. 7/10.
I don’t hate Solo. I just don’t really know why it exists, beyond answering a question no one was asking.
I saw Miss Browns Boys D’Movie in the cinema, think I actually enjoyed it more than ROS.
Seeing Phantom Menace in terrible 3D in the cinema was great, wish they had let Lucas finish that idea.
Fucking hell. Some spicy takes here
