I still love that moment. Some of the humour in the film does jar I must admit (not I’ve gotten over the surreal glee of Ade Edmondson being in star wars that scene is a bit much imo) but I feel in that moment something had to be done to undercut the solemnity of the ending of TFA. RJ wanted to do something unexpected but I don’t for a moment believe he wanted to say, “yeah, fuck Star Wars! I have no idea why I’m making this movie!” He just wanted to surprise the audience and take things in a different direction than they were anticipating.
