tbf second time I saw that scene i thought it might be a bit much for kiddies

We survived the end of Raiders pretty young :grimacing:

Raiders was a PG. Between the other 6 films and these new 3 has there been anything that has been more violent or more in need of a 12a rating? I’d say Rogue One of the new films has felt the need for a 12 certificate.

Yeah probably but I’ve learned watching these films with her that the psychological stuff affects her much more deeply than the physical stuff

It’s not quite as full on as Raiders though, force lightning isn’t as freaky as the Holy Ghost

Temple of Doom?
Ghostbusters?
RotJ even?

I mean most 12As are well founded

Basically this film is no more dodgy than loads before IMO

I have just spent 5 minutes on this. Temple of Doom was case studied originally PG now 12

Ghostbusters PG

From reading things on bbfc it appears that it depends when it was submitted to the bbfc and if has been recut and resubmitted for classification multiple times.

Temple of Doom was a precursor to the 12a wasn’t it? Like jurassic park, basically it got a pg, but with a caveat of “seriously, parental guidance is necessary”

Maybe but I know that one of the Spiderman films was the one that got the first 12a (turns out it was actually The Bourne Identity https://www.denofgeek.com/uk/movies/12a-ratings/49548/12a-the-problem-that-nobody-wants-to-fix I do remember the massive kick off about Spiderman getting a 12)

Tim Burton’s batman was the original 12, but that was a strict over 12s,only rather than the 12a

Temple of Doom only got PG cos the heart extraction scene was heavily edited in the UK version

went to see gremlins 2 at the godalming borough hall but they wouldn’t let me in because it was a 12 even though I was with my parents, I cried a lot and then we hired honey I shrunk the kids from the local video shop

I was 7 when my dad took me and my brothers to see Jurassic Park, and I remember the guy at the ticket counter saying “it’s not really suitable for anyone under 10”, and my dad saying “well he’s here now”, so the cinema guy shrugged and gave us the tickets.

Watching Jurassic Park for the first time is still the most mind-blowing cinema experience I ever had, fucking brilliant. Jumped out of my skin when the raptor leapt up and snapped at them as they climbed into the ceiling panel.

It was a pg, but with an extra warning

“Given a choice of phrases to describe their experience of the film – “too frightening for me” or “good and scary”, only 13% of the children said “too frightening” and 82% chose “good and scary”. The BBFC therefore had to choose a rating that would not deny the 82% the opportunity to enjoy the dino-thrills. A 12 or 15 could not accommodate that as those certificates would prohibit the admittance of anybody under those ages. The BBFC opted to award a PG certificate, but with a warning attached – “contains sequences which may be particularly disturbing to younger children or those of a sensitive disposition”

It led to the introduction of the 12a I think, due to the above

I was 9 when it came out, and went to see it in the cinema and yeah, it was the best thing ever. I definitely fell into the “good and scary” camp

Maybe I’ve misunderstood what you’re saying. I thought you were asking if a PG had deserved a higher rating more than you felt Raiders did.

Jaws is also a PG.

Temple of Doom had 1m 6s cut in 84. They were out back in and it was them set to 12A but it drew huge complaints at the time for its violence.

Made me laugh

Spider-Man led to the 12A due to demand from kids. Cinemas ignored the BBFC recommendation and set it to PG so the 12 A was created after I think.

JP caused a lot of discussion though.

I was an adult when I saw Jurassic Park, but fondly remember the sight of a cinema full of kids screaming and trying to hide under their seats (but LOVING it) during the scene where the T Rex menaces the children in the jeep.

Temple of Doom and Gremlins are the main reasons why PG-13 was set up as a rating in the US I think

Yeah but Gremlins was a 15 here so we just got a primary school full of Gremlins themed stuff but no way to watch it!
