To believe there wasn’t a skeletal outline for this sequel trilogy, and perhaps further believe that all writers/directors involved weren’t at least cognizant of each others stories/plots, is a simplistic defence by people who disliked TLJ in my view.

Yes Johnson had free reign to write what he wished but, as an example of inter-play between creatives, there is evidence he asked JJ to swap BB-8 with R2 at the end of TFA. JJ was then exec producer on TLJ and, although he was hands off the actual making, people believe he wouldn’t of read the shooting script and lending an ear to Trevorrow about pre-production of 9?

There is a whole new film left to tie-up this storyline and I think, once the dust settles, we’ll be in a better place to review it. Let’s be patient.

But this is the official line from all directors and Kathleen Kennedy, that interview I posted up thread Rian Jonson literally says he had a blank slate for Rey’s origin for instance.

It may be hard to believe they would take such a hands off approach to such a major franchise, but that is what all involved have said. So to say it is a simplistic defence of TLJ isn’t really fair, it on those who think it’s not true as all the evidence suggests it is

just not true though is it

Yeah it is

I mean you can see it in TLJ, things very obviously set up in TFA and then discarded

  • they completely made up the story as they went along with no ending etc in mind
  • they had some rough idea of what the overall story was

Have you not seen Lost?

i have, yes

I thought Lost famously had an ending but they were asked to drag it out.

I’ll give you that Kylo is saved is probably a given, but do people really think Palpatine was planned from the beginning? That TFA wouldn’t have done many things different if TLJ was in place, this trilogy has all the markings of an abe simpson monologue

I don’t know, none of us do, but I suspect each team were given the beats they needed to hit for the over-aching story but how they got there was up to them.

I guess the middle being improvised is still a valid comparison

Like, he couldn’t kill Rey or Kylo for example, so there was clearly some guidance.

That is probably true, but given one of the beats didn’t seem to be Rey’s background the beats must have been minimal

But they covered Rey’s background in TLJ.

Yeah but Rian Jonson has said he had free reign over it, suggesting no detailed plan

I liked the TLJ and I am patient.
I find it hard to believe there wasnt a road map, especially given the tight release schedule between TFA and TLJ. Would be a bit of a push to have a script written after the TFA and then go into full production etc so quickly. There must have been key plot points agreed for each movie.

Maybe it just has no relevance to the big beats they were given?

But people keep saying there must have been when the makers have said there wasn’t. Guess I’m more trusting if our Disney overlords
