I know - I’m hoping to wake up tomorrow and the trailer is sitting on YouTube! It’s going to be debuted during the TV coverage of some American Handball game (like TFA and TLJ before it).

John Boyega’s agent put a post on Instagram claiming it’ll be the 14th, but the 21st would’ve been Carrie Fisher’s 63rd birthday so there’s the split idea.

I don’t think that is a contradiction, a criticism that is often thrown at people who dislike TLJ is that we just want a rehash, pointing out much of TLJ is a rehash is to counter that. If someone likes TFA that doesn’t make them a hypocrite because they are not the ones saying rehash is good or bad either way, merely that if it applies to TFA it applies to TLJ.

Personally I thought TFA was a solid enough film that was let down by being so much of a rehash, que the obvious ‘can never be pleased’ criticism, as if rehash and something like TLJ were the only two options and there weren’t actually infinite possibilities

When it comes to any fictional world there is the form of the story and the underlying mechanics of meaning, the form is the surface level plot/characters/settings, and the meaning is the underlying themes and worldview. Many fans like the later to be consistent while enjoying the infinite variations and ways it can play out, I am not speaking for everyone but I am saying this contingent exists and I am one of them, that seems to be the basis of what genre is so it irks me when people talk about it in terms of only wanting ‘safe’ ‘rehashes’, appreciating the craft is equally as valid as appreciating innovation, doesn’t make someone some uncultured luddite.

So for me, and people coming from the same angle, it really was the worst of both worlds, on the surface level where there are infinite possibilities it was a rehash, but it messed with the fundamental spirit of star wars (not saying everyone has to agree with me here, but that is how a lot of people felt). I know people will argue it is actually completely consistent, but for me it is not, star wars was always good vs evil, with basically good people over coming setbacks and insurmountable odds in a swashbuckling adventure. And in my opinion not only does it move away from that it makes out that is stupid (which it is but it is a fantasy film not a gritty documentary). Things like making Po an actual psychopath, and luke a mean spirited curmudgeon just doesn’t sit right with me. So there is a lot being pointing out TLJ is a rehash, both in negating unfair criticism of a position, and pointing out in the area where many would like the most variation TLJ was the most conservative.

anyway I muting the star wars thread. seems to always be the same thing, someone (not you) will make a comment that is judgmental towards people who didn’t like it, i’ll argue why disliking it is valid perspective that should be respected, and then get treated like I have just decided to re-tread old ground for no reason

Excellent news, they’re killing off C3PO

Or they’re killing off everyone except C3PO, which would be a bold move, I guess

That did absolutely nothing for me. If anything it really dampened my expectations for it.

Edit : loved the slowed down sw theme “durrrrrrr durrrrrrr de de de duuuuuuurrrrr durrrrrrrrrr…”

Also the falcon had a round dish againis the kind of thing a nerd would have noticed.

Agreed! I’m sceptical of the film (as are most here?) but that was class.

Can’t believe they’re stealing my idea

Watched it again and changed my mind a bit. Does look a bit “Hey, if you like Star Wars you’ll love this new one. MORE spaceships! MORE music! MORE water! MORE MORE MORE!”

Isn’t that the sole point of this whole trilogy though? Which I am broadly fine with tbh

That 3po line is worse than anything in TLJ. They are not your friends 3po they consistently mistreat you

The space bits look fantastic the 2 things that made me eye roll and it is definitely reading a bit much into a trailer were:

The bit were they are charging on space horses which looked a bit Avenger esque

The bit where it looked like Kylo and Rey were attacking an apparition of Darth Vader

Still think the Emperor being in it is a bit of a cop out but, I’m happy to reserve judgment on that

The threepio bit was proper Disney.

Yeah I guess? Maybe I’m a contrarian bastard but I’ve far preferred the new droids and characters to the way the old crew were crowbarred in, Han broadly aside. So all this stuff with Lando, Emperor, Death Star etc doesn’t do much for me. More interested in the new characters’ arc.
