Gonna go see it again. Initial feeling, sadly, is one of disappointment. I don’t think it’s the ā€œit’s pushing things forward and is different and THAT’S why you didn’t like itā€ thing either. It’s not that different, not really. The weirder/quirkier moments all have their roots in both previous trilogies, and the shark jumping deus ex machina is featured in the animated series. If anything it feels like a watered down Abrams movie.

I think my main disappointment stems from the fact it feels like a lesser Rian Johnson work. I love how meticulously plotted his movies are, and the level of characterisation he builds in. This feels largely slap-dash and you can really tell which characters he’d rather not be having to deal with (Finn, Rose, Poe). The story doesn’t feel very compelling or thought out either, and doesn’t ā€œkick inā€ until about 1hr 40. Hoping a second watch improves things.

How did Rey know how to swim?

Forgot this was dis an everyone just has to be above everything ā€˜imagine caring about the films you enjoy…’.

Why didn’t the First Order get some of their many, many, many other ships to hyperspace jump in front of where the Rebellion ships were going and shoot them from the front?

There’s a very strict highway code in space and they were in a no overtaking area. The First Order may not care for life, but they respect the rules of piloting a ship.

Yeah it didn’t seem different at all (except the forced humour), it seemed like a medley of scenes from tesb an rotj, except strung together in an artificial way that didn’t make sense to the characters and situation.

Even the Death of Snoke at Kylo’s hands was pretty predictable, just happened surprisingly early with little groundwork in place, seemed quite prequel like with its disposable villains.

The only thing it did do different was change the main character of the trilogy of films which is the reason people like these films, beyond recognition, with a couple of lines of dialogue and a fleeting flashback

Yeah, the humour was an issue…it just didn’t land. Wasn’t there a ā€œyour mumā€ gag at the start?? The less said about the Attack Of The Clones CGI waste heap that is that entire 40 minute middle section the better. Not sure why on earth that wasn’t jettisoned in the writing early on. Also, the contrivance of having them be locked up with Benicio Del Stutter AND have him be a master cracker or whatever, then have their mission ultimately be a complete wash when it transpires Laura Dern and Super Space Flight Leia somehow failed to disclose actually, they had a plan all along. So there was no need for Finn and Rose to do…whatever it is they did, and ultimately, because they did do what they did, it caused Benicio Del Plot Hole give away the plan to the first order.

Definitely needs a rewatch and my reaction was more mixed than I initially expected, but it has some moments that were the most visually stunning things I’ve seen in any action/sci fi film and I was a big fan of most of Lukes story. So it’s a thumbs-up-but-slightly-leaning-towards-the-middle from me.

I think without that whole section I’d be leaning towards 8 out of 10 rather than 5 or 6. It’s so bad.

Just don’t take it so seriously, you’ll enjoy it more

I think this is going to be the first Star Wars film ever where I’m happy to wait to watch it at home in a few months.

They’re only tracking them once they jump they don’t know before hand Buuuuuut then you get into slippery Jedi jogic

Think I’m alone in thinking the casino sequence was fine really

I watched the Force Awakens last night and enjoyed it again. Prob will go and see Last Jedi again over xmas.

Yeah, I wasn’t that bothered by it, was the weakest section and the most obviously ā€œthis-is-a-level-for-the-video-gameā€ feeling bit but it’s not like there was loads of time spent there and it was key in building the dynamic between Finn and Rose innit.

Disagree, if I take things less seriously I enjoy them less

Apparently not!

if I don’t take things seriously I might enjoy bad things more but the good things less
