I don’t know, I have read a lot go negative reactions and the same issues come up: Luke’s character, forced humour, lack of back story for key characters, needless subplot.
Even if people have widely diverging ideas of what should have happened, I don’t think that means the film was in a ‘can’t win’ situation. I think people only pick apart and fall back to what they thought might happen after they are disappointed, doesn’t mean they were never open to things being different to what they expected, it doesn’t matter if it is good, think a lot of people just found this film was not good.
TFA wasn’t what I would have wanted but I was fine with it because I found it to be good enough. All the ideas I have said for how I thought things could be better, they are not things I thought must happen for it to be good, I just thought what did happen wasn’t very good so offered thoughts on what would have been better. Would have been delighted if all my ideas were confounded but in a story I found good, that is probably an ideal outcome
