I don’t know, I have read a lot go negative reactions and the same issues come up: Luke’s character, forced humour, lack of back story for key characters, needless subplot.

Even if people have widely diverging ideas of what should have happened, I don’t think that means the film was in a ‘can’t win’ situation. I think people only pick apart and fall back to what they thought might happen after they are disappointed, doesn’t mean they were never open to things being different to what they expected, it doesn’t matter if it is good, think a lot of people just found this film was not good.

TFA wasn’t what I would have wanted but I was fine with it because I found it to be good enough. All the ideas I have said for how I thought things could be better, they are not things I thought must happen for it to be good, I just thought what did happen wasn’t very good so offered thoughts on what would have been better. Would have been delighted if all my ideas were confounded but in a story I found good, that is probably an ideal outcome

This is incredible

C3PO is one of the greatest characters in Star Wars; he’s got fuck all to say yet he speaks over 6 million languages, he’s a robot that isn’t alive yet is constantly freaking the fuck out about dying.

also reckon he has an unrequited love thing going with artoo

haha what a plonker.

Mate not enough horneyness. Honestly I get sexually frustrated for all the characters when watching the new star wars movies! Could someone please fuck.

8. Poe rubbing BB-8’s “tummy”

Whats wrong with you!

The most surprising thing about this thread is discovering how passionately some people feel about Luke. Even when I was well into star wars as a youngling I thought Luke was a total wet plank.

I listen to belle & sebastian so I can relate

I think it is one of those things, Luke is no ones favourite character but he is completely integral to those films, they are his story.

Think my whole reaction to this film is based on imagining telling 6 year old me how the story ends, Luke just ends up a loser

I dunno, considering offing kylo was the ballsiest thing he’s ever done.

Just seen it. Loads of stuff I liked, some stuff I didn’t.

They basically remade Empire then stuck a really good last stand at the end. Got choked up when Luke told Leia that noone’s ever really gone. Loved how the Snoke and Rey anti-reveals have irritated every fanatic who’s spent too much time over the last two years trying to figure them out.

Laura Dern should have told everyone her plan. That and the whole casino-planet thing was just fucking dumb. Let’s release 20 cows and really stick it to these wealthy dicks!

Not sure what I made of that. Bit weird tonally, often breaking my immersion as I was starting to get into it. Occasionally visually stunning. Casino Zone can do one. As can the bullshit message of ‘kids and their pets are our new best hope (of Disney making back the cashola they bribed Lucas with)’.

Did have real fatigue though of all the Star Wars tropes. Space battles? Zzzzz. Falcon outrunning TIE Fighters through small spaces? Yawn. Lightsaber battles ending in a stalemate? Been there, done it.

Maybe I’ve just had too much of a good thing, and like Doctor Who and Spiderman, it’s the next generations turn to decide if it’s for them or not now?

Like it or not, the casino planet scene ended up being one of the most critical to the whole film though. Introducing those orphans who look to be future Jedi, proving Luke’s point that he isn’t the last one.

My friend reckons the kid picked up the broom with the force, can anyone confirm?

Every word of that is wrong.

Sorry, couldn’t resist. Casino planet achieved nothing. Some kid could have found that ring on jakku or something and dreamed of joining the resistance and it would’ve meant as much as that scene.

If the force is what he calls his wanking hand, maybe

I think that he did, yes.

Nah, pretty sure he picked it up with his hand and just started sweeping. Then held it up at the end.

I’ll look out again on Thursday but I remember it being leant against a wall and the kid holding his hand out and the broom being pulled towards him.
