This hits the nail on the head for me. (Though, not saying @ttf is arguing for that at all).

Just to confirm that I haven’t read the full thread so certainly don’t know what individuals have said here - just referencing what I’ve seen on Twitter/Reddit and the news about the petition. No shade directed at individuals here at all.

I enjoyed this tweet today

Guess I don’t see any conflict in Rey, sure we are told she is drawn to the dark side but I don’t see that in any of her actions

Did you ever believe Luke would turn?

Don’t think I’ve seen any criticism that suggests it should have worked in some hardcore fan only mythology, the most common thing is about how it just discarded the groundwork of the previous film, some see it as bold others immensely frustrating, seems like more of a TVs show type move, where hey have the space to do that kind of confounding disposal

Probably not but he at least lashes out in anger a few times to suggest it’s possible

I wouldn’t say that people have been explicitly complaining about the lack of a hardcore twist/reveal but I think it’s implicit. I can certainly see how that if you’ve invested decades into these characters and thought about them and lived with them then some of the choices will certainly be jarring and disappointing compared to expectations. I have definitely experienced that with some pop culture that I have lived with (being disappointed with strange new directions with bands, The Simpsons post Season 10).

I am in no way saying that fans can’t be disappointed with the film as it does make controversial decisions.

What I am saying (again, not directly to you, but to some of the commentary I’ve read online) is that not having a theory on Snoke’s backstory (for example) but still enjoying the film is perfectly valid too, and doesn’t make people ā€˜lesser’ fans of the franchise (and it certainly doesn’t destroy any childhoods).

Haven’t seen much talk about ā€˜lesser fans’, seen much more besmirching from the positive side with their characterisation of the critics, some seem to even enjoy the idea it disappointed people (not saying you are but some are quite gleeful about it)

Thought Poe’s arc was really good by the way. Went from being Wayne Rooney the superstar striker to Wayne Rooney the space finding, long ball playing number 10 he now is, in two hours.

So Rey having the opportunity to do the same to Luke isn’t the same?

What does she do except get a bit annoyed and leave

Yeh it’s a complete shitshow on all sides. Some people will like it, some won’t. I suppose it’s the same in all aspects of social media now - you’re in one camp or the other and there’s no room for appreciating the other. I do feel bad for people who are disappointed as I know how painful it can feel to watch something you love not go in a way that resonates with you, and Star Wars has this affect on people multiplied by the decades and childhoods of millions.

My main concern is that the outcry makes Episode IX (and future films) too safe - it would be easy now for example for Disney to calm the fanbase and say ā€œKylo manipulated Rey - her parents are actuallyā€¦ā€ and stick it to a safe and solid conclusion. Rian was a bold choice for director and I would hate to see other ā€˜left-of-centre’ director choices shy away from taking on a big budget franchise like this to avoid the backlash (I’ve seen a fair few tweets at Rian saying he’s ruined the whole Star Wars saga) - why would you put yourself through that abuse?!

Probably would have made the code breaker Jar Jar Binks in a flash suit if I wrote it. 6/10.

I just wished they had concentrated on making a good story rather than consciously respond to expectations, tfa no doubt played it too safe, this one decided to be a bold departure, two sides of the same coin, an all or nothing approach that put a strategy above story in my opinion

She completely outpowers him due to her power and believing Rylo’s side of the story, she could kill him right there but has the ā€œlightā€ in her to at least let Luke explain himself

I’m starting to think I must have had several microsleeps in this film and not taken things

I never thought she’d turn per se, but that’s because the scene wasn’t about her choosing the dark side over the light. It was whether her attraction to Kylo and his ā€œnewā€ ideology was stronger than her feelings about the Jedi, and I did believe for a few seconds that could happen - so for me there was a lot of internal conflict. Would have been pretty interesting too, 3rd film having the two powerful Force users teaming up to make things the way they want it, and maybe it would take Finn to bring her back to the side of ā€œgoodā€?

Good point - I’ve never thought of it that way. I can definitely see how it in some respects it obviously signposted it’s attempt to subvert expectations (Luke literally throwing the lightsabre over his shoulder after the set up of TFA ending) - I can see how that pushes too far in a ā€œlook at me and how strange this isā€.

Episode IX will be interesting - it could literally go anywhere from here. I think now that they’re slowly ridding themselves of the baggage of Luke, Han and Leia it will be a much better franchise now that they don’t have to resolve the legacies of those characters in an (impossibly) satisfactory way for everyone.
