My favourite thing about it is that the music basically stays consistent throughout but Bowie ratchets up the intensity throughout, especially on that line. It’s one of my favourite vocal performances ever.
Basically every cover ever starts quiet and gets loud and totally misses this.
Old story but love it: Bowie spotted producer Tony Visconti meeting his girlfriend ‘by the wall’ from the Hansa Studios window. I always used to think this was poetic licence, but having been to the studio, it’s definitely possible given where it was situated. Not sure if the guns would have shot above their heads, but it’s so beautiful I’ll let him off.
Totally agree that when there is talk of ‘greatest song of all time’, this is right up there.
That’s exactly how I feel with it. It succeeds in a couple of ways. Like how it solidifies that aesthetic and vibe that lots of legendary bands like Human League, Tubeway Army, Japan etc. would take forward in the 80s. You can also hear the influence on industrial music. Plus some of the cuts sound as modern to me here as some of the stuff he did in the 21st Century.
But, yeah, I’m not that into any of the other tracks apart from the single.
I for one would find this an absolute slog, an over-bloated mess.
I can appreciate some material on both albums but most of it is not for me, sounding too thin and hookless. Just halfway through a revisit of “Heroes” now.
Also might as well share my thoughts on Lust For Life, which I revisited a few days ago. Love the title track, The Passenger, and Tonight. Some Weird Sin is not bad. The rest (Sixteen and the entirety of side B) is either mid or I actively dislike it. Actually ended up disliking some of those tracks more than I had previous times. I ended up surprised that I sought this out on vinyl! But those first 3 tracks I mentioned are quite good.
A step down from The Idiot which isn’t perfect either, but nothing under 7/10.
Maybe two different albums, one of the side As and one of the side Bs.
Might give that a go as a couple of plsylists to see how it all sounds.
Overall better to have these two I think. Got both downloaded for the flight back from Aus to see if my feelings will flip regarding “Heroes” being better than Low.
just had that moment, this song fucking rules. looking forward to @1101010’s decision on whether side 1 of Low and side 1 of Heroes is good and if side 2 of Low and side 2 of Heroes is good too
Yeah, so I got time earlier to listen to both albums in full back to back (no rejigged side vs side stuff) and basically:
Still think “Heroes” is the better of the two
Think both are fundamentally 7/10 albums for me
I actually don’t think Sound & Vision is top tier, sorry. It’s great but it’s not “Heroes” great.
Be My Wife is prob my fave from Low
Get the criticisms about the harsher sounds of “Heroes” but it’s more my thing too.
the ambient stuff on Low just doesn’t ‘bite’ as much. It often reminds me of the more melancholic music sections on AdLib/SB for Indiana Jones & the Fate of Atlantic.
I’ll keep listening, though. Maybe they’ll click more.
Absolutely loving this thread. Never listened to Bowie properly before outside the obvious singles & been listening and reading this for every album. It’s great to get everyone’s perspectives on each of them & context on stuff like Low.
