Yeah, very true, I guess it’s just stigmatised (and rightly or wrongly I felt a bit embarrassed)

State of that forum (in more ways than one) looking back now…

The nested replies is horrendous, can’t believe we put up with it for so long.

And that thread… yikes.

Jesus. Got to the first response to your initial post and couldn’t stomach any more. Grim.

Lol my hatred for Fidel_Catstro was fucking powerful. Who know it would turn out that he was a complete creep and borderline sociopath (I knew. I knew all along)

What happened to him?

Some irl scandal, don’t really know the full details tbh but I don’t feel like I need to

I wonder what we’ll be like in 5 more years.

Fell out with a pal, and after five or six years met up with him in the pub to try to make peace. He spent half an hour listing out the STDs he’d caught in the intervening years like some weird badge of pride.

:-/

Haven’t seen him since.

That’s what I hoped initially but it quickly became weirdly laddy bants. And that was the whole conversation, just numbers and infections and pride in both.

This is an interesting read from the point of view that your points about the stigma of STIs leading to those suffering feel unable to seek treatment is tragically true. Someone very dear and close to me in my family recently died as a result of complications due to contracting HIV. They had the infection for 8 years but kept it to themselves until they were in hospital 2 months before their death. They didn’t seek treatment until 2 years before death (by being put in a position where they had to as a result of a different medical condition) by which time it was too late. The stigma surrounding it was undoubtedly the reason why they could not feel able to seek treatment as well as support from their family, who would have loved and supported them wholeheartedly. Had they been able to be open about it chances are they would still be here today living a normal life for many years. The whole thing is a fucking tragic travesty and is the saddest thing I’ve ever known.
