Informative, thank you.

A mate of mine manages a McDonalds. He’s about 40, worked there since leaving college. Absolutely loves it. He’s a smart lad, but he says they’re really good with him. Never asked him what he earns obviously but i’m led to believe it’s £30k+, he picks his hours, gets loads of time off, the bonusses are meant to be good. He says it’s challenging in that there’s a huge turnover of staff, lots of them don’t really want to be there and there’s not many peoole his age. I don’t think i could do it, but when i see people roll their eyes when he tells them where he works i get a bit annoyed.

Yeah, exactly. That’s the sort of thing I was referring to really. There needs to be a union for the industry in general and probably a QA specific one at that.

A friend of mine worked in one at uni and got a free meal every day he worked there. This was a long time ago though

Would be tempting to be all smiley to everyone and then as soon as they leave just stare menacingly ahead like Gustavo Frings.

also, as an interesting side point, my son calls McDonald’s Hot Donald’s, which is a better name

Yep. Stories like this are not uncommon. Also (and this depends from store to store and franchise to franchise) I had many shifts working there that were actually really good fun with a good bunch of people and, if the management’s decent, it needn’t be an awful place to work. I didn’t think the experience was half bad myself, although I do recognise my privilege in this that I was doing it whilst at university so I had less skin in the game than others for sure.

These guys are trying to get something off the ground (and I have submitted an application to them)

I’m glad the gamers / games writers who want better conditions and all that are getting more of a voice over the tedious consumer watchdog psychopath types

(or not a voice over, but are being heard more and more)

Yeah or sticking a round of nuggets on regular grill, banging a load of BBQ sauce and cheese on top and closing the grill top to make some kind of glorious nugget toastie combo. Esp when it was quiet and it was all going in the bin anyway.

I definitely agree with that. So many of the issues affecting workers in the games industry are ludicrously specific to that particular industry (and to roles within it even). More widespread big changes (living wage etc) would probably need a bigger, more widespread thing though I reckon.

I think that there’s been more talk from the party about joining unions and the benefits of a unionised society recently.

I mean, can you imagine any party leader in the past 40 years saying this?

Don’t know if this strike is in effect here but will be observing it anyway.

GF occasionally gets stuff delivered from Deliveroo and I would rather she didn’t but she’s generally beat after working her current absolute shitfest of a job. Gerenally don’t eat fast food myself as there’s nothing gluten free for the most part. Easy to avoid Spoons here as there’s only one and it’s in the city centre.

Use Deliveroo a fair bit. Too much if I’m honest. Also use the 'Spoons near my work on occasion as it’s the only place to get a pint of lime and soda for a quid. Last time I was in there Tim Martin was in there too, bowling about like he owned the place. Actually waved to the punters as he left and thats when I thought “I’m not coming to these places anymore”.

But yeah, I am in. (As in not using)

I’m so supportive of these. I think that when they win it’s going to highlight how bad the rest of the industry is across the board. When evil megacorps like McDonald’s Wetherspoons etc are forced to pay more fairly and treat staff properly it’s going to make a lot of the other less scrutinised places make similar changes.

Had a Maccos last night (9 nugs, top fries) but it was before midnight.

Only get deliveroo when I’m working very late. Fuck Spoons, obvs.

Do you ever dress up as a sexy Ronald McDonald for him?

Regarding the companies involved, I wouldn’t use Deliveroo or Uber Eats. Used the latter once because my wife wanted a McDonald’s delivered but that’s it. It’s too far into pure serfdom than I feel comfortable with tbh. “You! Go to my favourite restaurant and go fetch me my favourite food!”. Nah not for me personally.
