Sturgill Simpson

Haven’t seen a thread on ol’ Sturg so thought I’d start one. I’m going to his show in March at the Apollo as I’ve been absolutely obsessed with him since November/December.

He was always on my radar but never fully clicked until this video popped up on my Youtube feed and holy smokes, it’s phenomenal. I’ve watched some more from this tour and the band are astonishingly good. Apparently, their set at the Grateful Dead fest in Mexico this weekend was life affirming.

Sounds like he’s hitting the Springsteen stride of at least 3 hour sets every night, non-stop rock. Very excited!

I’m going to the same tour but opted for a trip to Bristol as the venue is much smaller - I did the same thing for Jason Isbell in November who I also got into around the same time last year. I love the variation across Simpon’s albums, and I also really love the idea of an ex-serviceman going full alt-country rather than being some big dumb stadium country rock artist. incredibly pumped for a Springsteen/Neil Young-esque epic set for sure!

would say that A Sailor’s Guide To Earth is my favourite but they all have something to love about them i think.

also shout out to both him and Isbell for their performances in Killers Of The Flower Moon!

This is how I slipped into the whirlwind tornado of Sturgill! He’s phenomenal.

Just looked closer at the poster for the tour - it’s billed as ‘An Evening With…’ which am I right in thinking tends to mean no support? Honestly, after the reviews of these 3hr+ sets in the US, I’ll happily sacrifice support.

Love Sturgill. Saw him on the Sailors Guide To Earth tour and he was brilliant. He’d released three albums by that point and played them all back to back.

Hoping to get a Bristol ticket at some point.

He’s very good. Modern day bluegrass done right. The Cuttin Grass’ Sessions are fantastic. An homage to the old.

Yeah not usually my thing at all but got proper obsessed with it for a few weeks. Kind of like country meets Pink Floyd
