Submit Your Best of Mogwai Playlist

btw I can’t remember if we discussed this already, but ever wondered why Take Me Somewhere Nice is their highest played song on Spotify? Check out the comments section of its youtube page (though TW: suicidal chat) it’s an oddly dark yet beautiful corner of the internet:

I think someone suggested it was featured in the game Life is Strange which is why its taken on quite a cult following

That comment section is heartbreaking :open_mouth:

I mentioned it a couple of years ago wondering why it had so many views (it’s over 80m now)

If it’s been used in a game then maybe that’s the explanation, good to finally get an answer on it

Generally picked the Peel Sessions versions where there was the option. The live tracks are a bit of annoying compromise - would love the studio recordings to have been a little bit closer to them.

I think the other potential reason is David Pajo the is on that track which would have attracted a bit of attention too

Haha why am I being sassy in response to that? I apologise for 2 year ago me, it would have been at a weird time where I just come back from Berlin

Wouldn’t call this a best of exactly, more the setlist that I’d like them to play if I were going to see them tomorrow. Couldn’t figure out how to reorder the playlist so ideally Small Children in the Background would be earlier (maybe after Terrific Speech). Also my preferred version of Helicon 1 is the one on the Special Moves bonus disc which sadly is not on Spotify.

Got it down to this:

Probably a wee bit heavy on the more obvious stuff but a lot of these tracks are my favourites because I’ve enjoyed them so much live.

Would be genuinely interested in seeing someone’s best-of playlist of post-Hawk is Howling material.

most of Hardcore plus Remurdered, Teenage Exorcists, Party in the Dark and Old Poisons. probably a couple of tracks from Les Revenants as well actually (Wizard Motor and This Messiah Needs Watching).

just remembered about the Party in the Dark b-side which is better than a lot of stuff that made it on to ECS

Until this weekend I wasn’t familiar with any of the Ten Rapid / EP+6 material aside from Helicon 1. It’s been interesting hearing how much they used to sound like Modest Mouse occasionally.

Other than CODY these are my two favourite releases by them (but then they’re from around the same time so). I never put it with Modest Mouse before but I do know exactly what you mean, it’s like that atmosphere of a quiet wonder of the world

Haven’t listened to it all-the-way-through in a while - it was the first Mogwai record I bought or heard. As I recall it falls off badly in the second half.

Emergency Trap and I Chose Horses are pretty boring but otherwise strong imo

Named after a sign they saw a driver holding at an airport.

I Chose Horses made my list.

Here’s mine.

Left off MFMK and MFS to get 20 tracks. Ratts, May Nothing, Helicon 1 and 2 Rights are the long ones.

Black Spider is underrated from Zidane. Didn’t put anything on from Atomic or Les Revenants but otherwise all LPs and EPs are accommodated I think.

Think it’s more on the chilled side

I do have a bigger 8 hr 80 track playlist as well

Well, I’ve reached the point where I have about 40 song lengths memorized, probably a sign to wrap this up soon. They’ve jumped up a tier for me in the past four days though, there’s so much great material. Excited to properly dive into EP+6 and Ten Rapid, I’m kind of glad I’ve saved them for this long.

always envious of someone getting into a band like Mogwai relatively late - EP+6 and Ten Rapid are fantastic. I got into them when Rock Action was released, so had CODY, YT and the EPs to get into from there, remember buying MFMK when it came out, and then have followed them ever since. Think I’m double figures now for seeing them live as well.

I found this soundboard of Glastonbury 2003 the other week which is brilliant:
