Is this just a generic suffragette thread?

Glad to see this wasn’t being glossed over on Twitter yesterday:

And big up the disabled suffragettes :muscle: :wheelchair:

Reading some of the twitter commentary on this, I was slightly surprised by the majority’s hindsight on the Suffragettes.

Obviously this is a massive confirmation of my privilege, but I was struck by how eager a lot of people were to say ‘yeh suffragettes were cool and that but they FAILED people of colour [and to a much lesser extent, working class women]’.

I think this kind of analysis misses the fundamental differences between then and now, attempting to contextualise the struggle in 1918 in today’s world, where discrimination against people of colour is very much a thing.

It’s too obvious and simplistic and I was not certain it was a point that necessarily needed to be made.

Dunno, just a rambling thought

People of 1918 in racism shocker (it’s obviously good and better that a lot of feminism is intersectional now)

I think the empasis that @anon64105032 was surprised by actually comes about precisely because there is a lot of non-intersectional white-feminism 2018

absolutely

yes, that’s true

maybe there’s two thoughts here:

  • a lot of twitter commentators are insufferably boring
  • as you say, judging past events in today’s context is of limited use

For over-18s and non-prisoners. Probably some other exceptions too.

Pal of mine has been writing some great stuff on (particularly Irish) suffragettes recently
