Exactly this. We can argue about captaincy or selection but they can only work with what there is. There are no test quality batsmen coming thorough. None. The current priorities of domestic cricket mean we are probably going to be uncompetitive at test level against the top teams for the foreseeable future unfortunately.

No mention of the 50 over game in this though. At the moment we are top of the world, but we hardly play any 50 over games any more in domestic cricket, and when we do the top players have been taken out for the Hundred. So how long before we’re only good at T20, or 100, or T10, or the T5 Whackaball?

All a bit depressing really.

Think this would be letting the English management off too lightly. He has been horribly mis-handled. Massively over bowled, and then had his character questioned for not playing well when clearly knackered and hurt.
